Gateway Church founder expected to plead not guilty

The founder of Gateway Church, Robert Morris, faced his most challenging moments as he surrendered himself to Oklahoma authorities amidst serious allegations.

Robert Morris, accused of multiple lewd acts with a child from the 1980s, surrendered to face his charges in Osage County, Oklahoma, The Christian Post reported.

On Monday morning, Morris presented himself at the Osage County Sheriff's Office following his indictment by a grand jury. The charges against him include five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child, serious allegations that trace back several decades.

After his surrender, the legal process moved swiftly; Morris was booked at precisely 7:57 a.m. and managed to secure his release by 8:11 a.m. His swift release was facilitated by a $50,000 bail bond. This quick transition from booking to release underscores the efficiency and preparedness of his legal team.

The Legal Stance and a Scheduled Arraignment

Morris' attorney, Mack Martin, has been vocal about the defense's stance, expecting to enter a not-guilty plea on behalf of Morris. This plea is scheduled to be formally presented at an arraignment later in the day at 3 p.m. Monday. This immediate legal response indicates a well-prepared defense strategy aiming to vigorously contest the charges.

Cindy Clemishire, the accuser in the case, alleges that Morris sexually abused her over several years starting when she was just 12 years old. Her accusations detail a troubling span of repeated abuse throughout her childhood.

Morris had previously resigned from his pastor role at Gateway Church last June as a result of these looming allegations. This move was seen as Morris stepping aside to focus on the legal battles ahead.

A church's firm position on the issue

In response to these developments, Gateway Church has taken a definitive stance. Nic Lesmeister, the executive pastor of global outreach, communicated that the church has drawn a clear line on this matter. He emphasized that the church is looking forward to continuing to offer prayers for everyone involved or affected by the ongoing legal proceedings.

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has been particularly sharp in his comments regarding the case. Drummond highlighted the gravity of the accusations given Morris' former role as a pastor, underlining the betrayal of trust inherent in the allegations.

A previous legal attempt to resolve matters involved Drummond, who represented Cheshire. In 2005 and 2007, efforts were made to negotiate a settlement with Morris, which ultimately did not materialize due to Morris' insistence on a non-disclosure agreement, adding another layer of complexity and contention to the historical context of the case.

Victim Speaks Out After Decades

Cindy Clemishire, after waiting nearly 43 years for justice, expressed her gratitude towards the authorities for their dedication to bringing this case to light. "After almost 43 years, the law has finally caught up with Robert Morris for the horrific crimes he committed against me as a child," said Clemishire. She remains hopeful for a just resolution through the legal system.

Drummond’s stance has been clear and stern regarding the intolerance for sexual misconduct, particularly with minors. "There can be no tolerance for those who sexually prey on children," Drummond stated, emphasizing the egregious nature of the allegations against a figure like Morris who was in a position of trust.

As Morris braces for his arraignment, the community, legal bodies, and those watching from afar wait to see how this case unfolds, taking into account the severity of the allegations and the potential consequences for someone who once held a significant position of spiritual leadership.

Critical Moments in a Significant Case

The upcoming court proceedings are slated to be highly scrutinized, bringing decades-old allegations into the present-day courtroom. As both sides prepare their arguments, the implications of this case extend beyond the individuals involved to touch on broader issues of trust, leadership, and accountability.

The not guilty plea, if entered as expected, will mark the beginning of a complex legal battle that will likely capture public and media attention due to the high-profile nature of the defendant and the serious nature of the accusations.

For now, Robert Morris stands at a pivotal point, with the legal system poised to delve deep into allegations that have cast a long shadow over his past. The outcome of this case could have lasting implications for all parties involved and for the community that once trusted Morris as a spiritual leader.
