Girl recovering from church shooting begins inpatient rehab

A 12-year-old Minneapolis student who was shot in the head during a mass shooting at a church last month is making what doctors and family describe as an extraordinary recovery.

ABC7 News reported that Sophia Forchas, critically injured in the Aug. 27 shooting at the Church of the Annunciation, has been moved from acute care into inpatient rehabilitation as her condition steadily improves.

The shooting occurred during a morning school Mass to celebrate the beginning of the academic year. Students from Annunciation Catholic School, including Sophia, had gathered inside the Church of the Annunciation when the assailant began firing through a window.

Attack Kills Two and Injures Dozens

According to Minneapolis police, the gunman fatally shot two students and wounded 21 others before taking his own life. The act of violence shook the tight-knit church and school community, leaving families devastated and officials seeking answers.

Sophia sustained what doctors called the most severe injury among the surviving children. A bullet entered her skull, causing extensive brain damage and damaging a major blood vessel, according to her neurosurgeon, Dr. Walt Galicich.

In an emergency procedure, surgeons removed the left side of Sophia’s skull to reduce pressure and prevent further harm. Her medical team initially had grave concerns about her chances of survival.

Unexpected Progress Signals Hope

Despite the early danger and uncertainty, Sophia began to show signs of neurological improvement in the following weeks. Her family calls her recovery so far a "miraculous" turn that has inspired renewed hope.

This week, doctors at Hennepin Healthcare transitioned Sophia from acute care to an inpatient rehabilitation program. The move marks a significant milestone in her long road toward potential recovery.

“Sophia is strong, brave, and unwavering in her fight toward healing,” her family said through a statement released by Hennepin Healthcare. “We ask that you continue to pray for her as she walks this road to recovery. It is by God’s will that she has come this far.”

Mother Learns of Tragedy at Work

Sophia's mother, a nurse at Hennepin Healthcare, was preparing to assist with treating victims of the attack when she learned her own daughter was among the injured. The harsh discovery added a deeply personal layer to an already traumatic day for the hospital staff.

The Forchas family has continued to remain by Sophia’s side throughout her treatment, sharing glimpses of her journey publicly to thank supporters and highlight her progress. An undated photo released in September by her father, Tom Forchas, shows Sophia as she continues her recovery.

Her doctors have emphasized the length and difficulty of the road ahead, which will include substantial therapy, both physical and cognitive. However, the family remains optimistic due to her strength and recent advances.

Community and Family Rally in Support

In their most recent statement, Sophia’s loved ones described her resilience as a source of strength not only for them but for hospital staff and others tracking her journey. “Though she still has a long journey ahead, filled with extensive therapy, her resilience continues to inspire hope at every step,” the family said.

Police have not released the name of the gunman, and authorities are continuing to investigate possible motives. The school and church communities have held multiple vigils and offered support resources for affected students and families.

The Church of the Annunciation has since resumed limited functions, but security measures have been noticeably increased. Counseling services have also been made available to children and staff still coping with the trauma.

Path Forward Remains Uncertain but Encouraging

While Sophia’s exact prognosis remains uncertain, her doctors are encouraged by the progress she has made. Moving into rehabilitation is a vital step toward reclaiming functions affected by her brain injury.

Support has poured in from across Minneapolis and beyond, with community members donating to medical care funds and sharing messages of encouragement. Church leaders have praised Sophia’s bravery and expressed continued commitment to the healing process for all those hurt by the tragedy.

As her treatment continues, the Forchas family says they are focusing on each small victory, strengthened by the support from their community and Sophia’s determination to recover.
