Greg Sharpe, longtime voice of Nebraska college sports, dies at 61

Greg Sharpe, a prominent figure in college sports broadcasting, has passed away at the age of 61 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Sharpe's career spanned over two decades, marking significant achievements in sports broadcasting for both football and baseball at the University of Nebraska, as the New York Post reports.

An iconic voice for Nebraska football since 2007 and for Nebraska baseball since 2008, Sharpe died on Friday, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the sports community.

His battle with cancer had been public since he revealed his diagnosis in April of the previous year.

Longstanding Commitment to Nebraska Sports

Before his memorable tenure in Nebraska, Sharpe was known as the voice of Kansas State football and basketball from 1996 to 2002. This role came naturally to him, as he was also an alumnus of Kansas State, providing a deep connection to college sports that would define his career.

Throughout his years with Nebraska, Sharpe became much more than a sports announcer. His deep voice and enthusiastic narration brought to life many of Nebraska's memorable sports moments, permanently etching them in the hearts of fans.

In recognition of his contributions, the Nebraska athletic department recently named the press box radio booth the "Greg Sharpe Radio Booth," solidifying his legacy within the institution.

Awards and Acknowledgments Mount

In December, shortly before his passing, Sharpe was honored as Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. This accolade was a testament to his profound impact on sports journalism and his popularity among peers and listeners alike.

His work went beyond just calling games; he narrated the stories of countless student-athletes, promoting not only the sports but the spirit and culture of Nebraska.

Sharpe's professionalism and dedication were widely recognized, making him a beloved figure not only among colleagues but also across the wider community of sports enthusiasts.

Family, Community Touched by Support

Sharpe is survived by his wife, Amy, and his daughters, Emily, Campbell, and Taylor, who remember him as a dedicated family man and more than just a broadcaster. "A wonderful husband, father, brother, friend and of course broadcaster," his family stated, reflecting on his multi-faceted role within their lives and his professional field.

The family also emphasized how the support from the community during Sharpe's illness had been overwhelming. "The love shown to him during this difficult time truly touched Greg and our family," they shared, highlighting the comfort brought by the fans' prayers and messages.

They further remarked on his bravery in facing the disease, supported by his strong faith and the backing of an entire community, including the University of Nebraska and Playfly Sports.

University Leaders Express Depth of Loss

Troy Dannen, Nebraska’s athletic director, and Dr. Jeffrey Gold, the university's president, both expressed deep sorrow over Sharpe's passing. They praised his exceptional character and professional ethos, which Dannen noted defined what it meant to be a Husker.

"This is a tough day for everyone," Dannen said, reflecting the sentiment of the entire university and its supporters. "Not only those who were close to Greg and those who had the opportunity to work with him but also for Husker fans who have fond memories of Greg’s calls of iconic moments in Nebraska history."

Dr. Gold added, "Greg was more than an announcer; he was a storyteller, a champion for our student-athletes, and a constant, trusted presence for all who love this university. His impact will endure in the memories he created and the legacy he leaves behind."

Memorial and Lasting Legacy

As Nebraska mourns the loss of one of its most influential sports voices, the community also celebrates the profound impact Sharpe has left behind. His voice will forever resonate in the memories of thrilling game days and poignant sports triumphs, chronicled with passion and sincerity.

Plans for a memorial service are underway, offering friends, family, and fans a chance to pay their respects and remember a man who was much more than the voice of Husker football and baseball but a true icon in sports broadcasting.
