Hawley Exposes Secret Service's Rejection of Drone Tech at Trump Rally

Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley has released a disturbing report involving the Secret Service's handling of security measures during a recent political rally.

A whistleblower has indicated that the U.S. Secret Service turned down offers to use advanced drone technology at a rally where an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was later perpetrated, as Breitbart reports.

Details Emerge from the July 13 Assassination Attempt

The incident in question took place on July 13, during a rally headlined by Trump. Investigations commenced after the event have brought to light that the U.S. Secret Service had declined assistance from local law enforcement that could have employed drone technology to enhance security at the venue.

This information was brought forward by a whistleblower, who communicated the details to Senator Hawley. The senator, who is deeply concerned about these revelations, took immediate action by writing to Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, outlining the gravity of the situation.

The whistleblower’s accounts suggest that the Secret Service had access to drone resources that could potentially detect and neutralize threats from active shooters, yet they opted not to deploy this technology.

Hawley’s Urgent Communication to DHS

Upon learning of this significant oversight, Hawley sent a letter to Secretary Mayorkas last Thursday. The letter highlighted the perceived lapses in security protocols and the puzzling decisions made by the Secret Service on the day of the rally.

In his correspondence, Hawley expressed bafflement over the Secret Service's refusal to use the drone technology. He pointed out the irony that the shooter himself used a drone to survey the rally area mere hours before the event, indicating a stark oversight.

Scrutiny Intensifies Over Secret Service’s Decisions

In the wake of the assassination attempt, the Secret Service did request the deployment of the same drone technology they initially refused, to survey the site for further threats and secure the area. This change in stance raised further questions about their previous decision-making processes.

In his sharply worded letter, Hawley cited, "It is hard to understand why USSS would decline to use drones when they were offered, particularly given the fact USSS permitted the shooter to overfly the rally area with his drone mere hours before the event."

Congressional Testimony Requested by Hawley

Hawley’s demands did not end with the letter. He has called for Secretary Mayorkas to testify before Congress concerning what he described as "staggering security failures." His request aims to ascertain the reasons behind the DHS’s decisions and to prevent such security oversights in the future.

This request reflects not just a concern for the intricacies of this particular case but also underlines the imperative for transparency and accountability within the agencies tasked with protecting high-profile figures in the U.S.

Role of the FBI in the Post-Attack Investigation

FBI Director Christopher Wray provided more insight into the events that unfolded.

He confirmed that the shooter did utilize a drone to reconnoiter the rally hours before making the assassination attempt.

This use of a drone by the perpetrator only underscores the potential utility of the drone technology that was originally offered to the Secret Service.

All Eyes on Upcoming Congressional Hearings

Upcoming hearings, which are expected to feature testimonies from key DHS officials, are eagerly awaited. Hawley, along with other lawmakers, hopes these sessions will shed more light on the decisions that led to this near-tragic event and how similar incidents can be mitigated in the future.

In conclusion, the events of July 13 have raised serious inquiries regarding the readiness and adaptability of the Secret Service when offered technological aids such as drones.

These tools claimed capable of not only identifying but potentially neutralizing threats, were not utilized, leading to significant security lapses.

As Hawley pursues answers, the nation watches, hoping for enhanced protection strategies at future events hosting public figures.
