House chairman supports Trump's Venezuela operation with resolution

Washington's latest political chess match unfolds with a bold move as House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford, R-Ark., prepares to introduce a resolution on Monday applauding the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

This resolution, rooted in past Democratic statements, underscores a once-bipartisan push to oust Maduro, spotlighting at least eight bills from Democrats over recent years that branded him a national security threat to the United States and a danger to his own people.

The issue has reignited fierce debate on Capitol Hill, with opinions splitting sharply over the legitimacy and necessity of the Trump administration's recent operation in Venezuela.

Revisiting Democratic Criticism of Maduro

Crawford's resolution leans heavily on historical rhetoric from across the aisle, and Fox News obtained text detailing the pointed language Democrats used in prior legislation. Bills from figures like Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., demanded an end to Maduro’s grip on power, accusing him of sabotaging Venezuela’s electoral integrity.

Another measure by Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., took aim at the Venezuelan regime’s practice of wrongful detentions, pushing for it to be labeled a state sponsor of such actions. These words paint a picture of grave concern, now wielded to justify recent U.S. involvement.

Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., didn’t mince words either in her 2024 bill, stating Maduro engaged in a “long-term pattern or serious instances of activity adverse to the national security of the United States.” That’s a hefty charge, yet today’s Democratic outcry over the capture suggests a convenient memory lapse.

Democrats Shift Tone on Venezuela Policy

Fast forward to now, and the tune from many Democrats sounds starkly different, with accusations flying that Trump’s operation was an act of war lacking congressional green light. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries posted on X, calling it anything but a law enforcement move, alleging deception to the public.

Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Conn., echoed that sentiment online, warning of warmongering and an unjustified invasion under false pretenses. Such fiery pushback clashes with the very bills Crawford’s resolution quotes, revealing a puzzling pivot.

Look at Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., whose past legislation mirrored Slotkin’s, framing Maduro’s regime as a persistent threat to American safety. If that was the stance then, why the uproar over decisive action now?

Trump's Action Aligns with Past Calls

Crawford argues the operation earlier this month was a direct answer to what Democrats themselves urged, as he noted, “Democrats have introduced numerous pieces of legislation condemning the Maduro regime, declaring Maduro an illegitimate president, and urging the U.S. to take decisive action.” That’s not speculation; it’s documented intent.

Under Trump’s watch, the U.S. sent a clear signal to adversaries in our hemisphere, as Crawford put it, “securing our Western Hemisphere neighborhood” with strength. This isn’t reckless bravado; it’s following through on a shared goal.

Yet, critics persist in framing this as overreach, ignoring how their own words built the case for intervention. Hypocrisy in politics isn’t new, but rarely is it this glaring.

A Unified Stand or Partisan Divide?

The resolution isn’t just a pat on the back for Trump; it’s a reminder of a time when removing Maduro wasn’t a partisan football to kick around. Bipartisan consensus once held that this man endangered not just Venezuela but U.S. interests, too.

Now, with Maduro captured, the split reaction shows how quickly unity fractures when political points are up for grabs. It’s a shame, because the stakes in our hemisphere demand more than posturing.

Crawford’s move to table this resolution on Monday could force a reckoning, making lawmakers confront whether they stand by their past warnings or just play to the moment’s outrage. Venezuela’s future, and our security, deserve better than flip-flopping for headlines.
