Hunter Biden claims Jake Tapper pushed for an interview while Beau was dying
An explosive dispute has reignited between CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Hunter Biden, with the former president’s son accusing Tapper of relentless calls as his brother Beau lay dying.
According to a Daily Mail report, Hunter Biden says Tapper hounded him for an interview at one of the most traumatic moments of his life. The accusation comes as Tapper promotes his new, highly critical book about President Joe Biden’s alleged decline and Hunter’s role in the family.
As Tapper’s book tour gains attention, both he and Hunter Biden are trading insults, with each side accusing the other of dishonesty and emotional manipulation. The feud has reignited old wounds and raised new questions about the relationship between media figures and the families of political leaders.
Hunter Biden claims ‘heartless’ pursuit
Hunter Biden, 55, told media outlet Breaker on Wednesday that Jake Tapper repeatedly contacted him in May 2015 as his older brother Beau Biden was dying of brain cancer. Hunter claims that after ignoring multiple calls from Tapper, the CNN anchor called from a blocked number, leading to a highly charged exchange.
Biden, who was pardoned for federal gun and tax-related charges in December, described the experience as “impossible to forget or misremember.” He painted Tapper’s pursuit for an interview as invasive and insensitive during a time of personal agony.
Hunter told Breaker that when he finally answered Tapper’s call, he responded bluntly: “Go f**k yourself, Jake.” Beau Biden died at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center days later, on May 30, 2015, at age 46.
Jake Tapper’s response and heated Super Bowl encounter
Tapper has publicly dismissed Hunter’s account, calling it “a patently false lie.” The CNN anchor acknowledged a confrontation with Hunter at the 2018 Super Bowl in Minneapolis but insisted it was about an unrelated grievance. Tapper said Hunter confronted him over coverage “he wrongly believed I had done regarding his drug use and divorce,” which Tapper says he never reported on.
Witnesses previously told Puck that Hunter threatened Tapper at the Super Bowl, allegedly saying he “would knock [him] out” if not for the crowd around them. Tapper’s spokesperson also denied the phone call allegations, calling them illogical and unfounded.
A spokesperson for Tapper noted that he has conducted sit-down interviews with President Joe Biden, including when Biden was vice president in 2020, and argued these interviews prove Tapper was not viewed as an adversary by the administration.
Book allegations and media criticism
Tapper’s new book, titled “Original Sin,” examines Hunter Biden’s influence within the Biden family and claims the president’s inner circle concealed signs of his decline. The book’s release has sparked controversy as Tapper amplifies criticisms of Hunter’s past behavior and family dynamics.
In interviews with Katie Couric and Megyn Kelly, Tapper described Hunter as “provably demonstrably unethical, sleazy, and prone to horrible decisions.” He went so far as to state, “After his brother died, he cheated on his wife with his brother’s widow and then got her addicted to crack.” Tapper added that he had little personal connection to Hunter, having met him “like once or twice.”
During a conversation with Kelly, Tapper admitted that he and other journalists had failed to hold President Biden accountable for transparency about his health. Kelly pressed Tapper on why he did not ask about Biden’s health in a 2020 interview, to which Tapper replied, “No, he wasn’t transparent at all,” and acknowledged the failure.
Hunter Biden pushes back against Tapper’s narrative
Hunter Biden insists the 2018 confrontation stemmed from Tapper’s persistent calls in 2015, not coverage of his personal issues. He described Tapper’s behavior as dishonest and damaging during one of the darkest periods of his life.
Multiple sources, as well as Hunter himself, told Breaker that the feud did not end at the Super Bowl. Hunter’s characterization of Tapper as “heartless” has been echoed by his allies, who argue that the anchor’s actions go beyond the bounds of responsible journalism.
Tapper’s representatives continue to deny that the repeated calls ever happened, stating, “The idea that Jake could do something so heartless… completely defies logic.” The debate over the veracity of Hunter’s claims versus Tapper’s denials remains unresolved, leaving both sides deeply entrenched.
