Hunter Biden spotted in South Africa without former Secret Service detail

Cape Town’s sunny streets just got a new celebrity sighting, but it’s not the kind Hunter Biden might have hoped for. Just last week, the former first son was spotted cruising in a rented Toyota sedan, a far cry from the armored Chevrolet Suburbans he once enjoyed, as Fox News reports. No Secret Service in sight -- just Hunter, his wife Melissa Cohen Biden, and their son Beau Biden, navigating life without the protective bubble.

Hunter Biden’s South African jaunt marks his first public appearance since his father’s prostate cancer diagnosis rocked headlines.

The family was seen on Sea Point Main Road, a posh Cape Town strip, handling mundane tasks like paying for parking and visiting a butcher. This glimpse into their new normal comes amid swirling Republican probes into alleged cover-ups of Joe Biden’s cognitive decline.

Back in March 2025, President Donald Trump pulled the plug on Hunter’s Secret Service detail, a move that raised eyebrows.

Former President Joe Biden had extended his son’s protection indefinitely, despite standard protocol limiting it to children 16 or younger. Trump’s decision, made while Hunter vacationed in South Africa, left him exposed in more ways than one.

From Suburbans to modest sedans

Hunter’s downgrade to a Toyota rental speaks volumes about his shifted circumstances. Once shielded by black Chevy Suburbans, he now blends into Cape Town’s traffic like any tourist. Actions, it seems, have consequences -- even for the well-connected.

The timing of Hunter’s sighting couldn’t be more politically charged. Republicans, led by Sens. Eric Schmitt and John Cornyn, are gearing up for a Senate Judiciary hearing on June 18. Their target: an alleged conspiracy to hide Joe Biden’s mental decline during his presidency.

The hearing promises to be a spectacle, though witnesses are still being lined up. It’s the first full congressional dive into claims that the media and Biden’s inner circle masked his cognitive struggles. Hunter’s carefree Cape Town outing feels like a bold middle finger to the scrutiny back home.

Family affair in Cape Town

Hunter, Melissa, and Beau appeared unfazed by the political storm brewing stateside. Their Sea Point errands painted a picture of domestic normalcy, albeit under a microscope. Without the Secret Service, every parking meter stop becomes a potential headline.

CNN's Jake Tapper once called Hunter “demonstrably unethical, sleazy, and prone to horrible decisions.” Harsh words, but they echo the skepticism many conservatives feel about Hunter’s charmed life.

Yet, seeing him tackle fatherly duties in a foreign land, one wonders if he’s just trying to outrun his past.

The loss of Secret Service protection isn’t just logistical -- it’s symbolic. Hunter’s no longer untouchable, a reality that stings more in the context of his father’s health crisis. Prostate cancer is a brutal diagnosis, and Hunter’s absence from the U.S. during this time raises questions about family priorities.

Republican probes gain steam

Schmitt and Cornyn aren’t pulling punches with their upcoming hearing. They’re determined to expose what they see as an orchestrated effort to prop up Joe Biden’s presidency despite his alleged decline. The Cape Town sighting only fuels their narrative of a family dodging accountability.

Hunter’s South African getaway, while legal, feels tone-deaf to many on the right. With congressional hearings looming, his casual butcher visits seem like a calculated act of defiance. Or maybe he’s just craving some normalcy -- who can blame him?

Still, the optics are rough. Republicans argue that Hunter’s protection was a misuse of taxpayer resources, especially given his age and controversies. Trump’s decision to yank it was a flex of power, reminding everyone that privilege isn’t permanent.

New chapter for Hunter?

Hunter’s lack of Secret Service detail changes the game. No longer cocooned by federal agents, he’s vulnerable in ways he hasn’t been in years. Cape Town’s wealthy enclaves might offer temporary solace, but the spotlight follows him everywhere.

The Senate Judiciary hearing will likely amplify calls for transparency about the Biden family’s dealings. Hunter’s South African adventure, however innocent, hands Republicans fresh ammunition to question his judgment. It’s a classic case of bad timing meeting worse optics.

For now, Hunter Biden drives on, a Toyota sedan carrying the weight of a fractured political legacy. His family’s Cape Town chapter might be a bid for peace, but back home, the storm is just beginning. Conservatives watching from afar can’t help but smirk: accountability, it seems, catches up eventually.
