Ilhan Omar dodges questions after police raid her son's home, find weapons tied to felon roommate

Minneapolis police found multiple weapons and ammunition inside the home Rep. Ilhan Omar's 20-year-old son shares with a convicted felon, and Omar refused to say a word about it when a reporter caught up with her on Capitol Hill.

Officers executed a search warrant on August 25 at the residence shared by Adnan Hirsi, Omar's son, and his 22-year-old roommate Abdulrahman Abdi, Breitbart News reported. The raid turned up multiple firearms and ammunition. Abdi, a convicted felon who is legally barred from possessing guns under federal law, now faces a weapons charge.

The sequence began with a routine traffic stop. Minneapolis police pulled Abdi over and discovered he had no driver's license and no proof of insurance. His car was impounded. Officers later found a firearm, one that Abdi, given his felony record, had no legal right to possess. That discovery gave police the basis to obtain a search warrant for the home he shares with Hirsi.

Ten prior arrests and a felony conviction at 100-plus mph

Abdi's criminal history is not thin. He has been arrested ten times before this incident. In 2024, he was convicted of a felony speeding charge for driving more than 100 miles per hour. Despite that record, he was released just one day after his arrest in connection with the weapons found at the home.

Hirsi, Omar's son, has not been arrested and is not accused of any crime. Omar herself is not accused of wrongdoing in the matter. But the fact that a sitting congresswoman's son was living with a repeatedly arrested felon, in a home where police found an illegal weapons cache, raises obvious questions about judgment and accountability.

Omar is no stranger to scrutiny. The Department of Justice has reportedly been investigating Omar and her family, and her financial disclosures have drawn pointed questions from watchdogs and political opponents alike.

Omar walked away from every question a reporter asked

Reporter Nicholas Ballasy approached Omar in the hallways of Capitol Hill and asked directly about the raid. He posed a straightforward question:

"What do you know about the situation, why it happened in the first place?"

Omar kept walking. Ballasy pressed further:

"Are you going to advise your son to move from his place? Away from that situation? We were just wondering what you thought about the whole thing."

Omar offered no response. She did not stop, did not acknowledge the questions, and did not provide any statement. Her congressional office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, either.

That silence is notable for a lawmaker who has built a public identity around gun control advocacy. Omar has vocally supported measures that would restrict lawful gun ownership for millions of Americans. Yet when illegal firearms turned up in her own son's home, possessed by a roommate with a lengthy criminal record, she had nothing to say.

The contrast is hard to miss. Omar's policy position assumes that tighter restrictions on legal gun purchases will reduce gun violence. The raid on her son's home illustrates the other side of the equation: criminals who already cannot legally own firearms obtain them anyway. No background check, no waiting period, and no proposed regulation would have stopped a ten-time arrestee from breaking the law again.

Omar has also faced questions about revised financial disclosures that wiped out millions in reported assets, adding to a pattern of evasion when uncomfortable facts surface.

Abdi walked free a day after his arrest

One of the more striking details is how quickly Abdi was released. Police found illegal weapons in the home of a man with ten prior arrests and a felony conviction. He was booked, and then he was out, one day later. He faces a weapons charge, but his rapid release raises the kind of questions that have dogged soft-on-crime jurisdictions across the country.

Minneapolis has been at the center of law-enforcement controversies for years. City council members have rallied behind defendants facing federal indictments, and the political culture in Omar's district has repeatedly clashed with the priorities of rank-and-file officers and residents who want basic public safety.

Right-wing activist Benny Johnson summarized the optics bluntly on X, calling the situation "not a good look for Ilhan Omar," Fox News reported.

The broader region has also grappled with major fraud cases. The Feeding Our Future scandal, one of the largest pandemic-era fraud schemes in the country, unfolded in Omar's home state and reinforced public frustration with accountability gaps in Minnesota governance.

Gun control for thee, silence for me

Omar has made restricting Second Amendment rights a signature cause. She has supported legislation aimed at limiting what law-abiding Americans can buy and carry. That record makes her refusal to address the raid all the more conspicuous. A lawmaker who wants to regulate guns for everyone else will not even discuss illegal guns found under her own family's roof.

Hirsi is an adult and is responsible for his own choices, including his choice of roommate. Omar is not legally implicated. But voters and constituents are entitled to ask whether a congresswoman who lectures the country about firearms has anything to say when the problem lands on her own doorstep.

Political challengers have already been pressing Omar on questions of integrity. A retired state trooper running against her in Minnesota has made fraud and accountability the centerpiece of his campaign, and episodes like this one only sharpen the argument.

Omar's strategy appears to be the same one she has deployed before: say nothing, wait for the news cycle to move on, and hope voters forget. It is a strategy that works until it doesn't, and the pile of unanswered questions keeps getting taller.
