Investigation into Planned Parenthood’s federal funding launched by Greene and DOGE

investigation into Planned Parenthood’s federal funding launched by Greene and DOGE

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and the Department of Government Efficiency launched a high-profile investigation Friday into Planned Parenthood’s use of federal funds.

According to Breitbart, the probe follows a report alleging the organization may be allocating taxpayer money toward unauthorized services, including abortions and gender-related treatments for minors.

The investigation was triggered by claims from Live Action, a pro-life advocacy group, which released an undercover report suggesting Planned Parenthood provides hormone therapies to adolescents as young as 16. The report alleges that these treatments are sometimes administered without adequate parental or medical oversight, raising concerns about compliance with federal funding policies.

Concerns Over Alleged Fund Misuse Raised

In a formal letter addressed to Planned Parenthood President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson, Greene cited potential “commingling” of federal funds, which are designated for specific services such as cancer screenings and wellness exams. She warned that diverting funds away from their intended use could violate regulations under Title X, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Greene questioned whether taxpayer money is supporting restricted activities like cross-sex hormone treatments for minors, or even abortions, both of which face regulatory limitations on federal funding. The Hyde Amendment prohibits the use of federal funds for abortion services, while a past executive action under President Donald Trump blocked federal support for sex change procedures for minors.

The letter noted that during the 2023–2024 fiscal year, Planned Parenthood reported nearly $800 million in taxpayer funding—an increase of close to $100 million from the previous year. Over the same period, the organization performed more than 400,000 abortions, a notable rise from the prior year's figure of around 392,000, according to Greene’s statement.

Increase in Abortion Numbers Scrutinized

Greene emphasized that abortions have increased by 23% over the last decade, according to Planned Parenthood’s annual figures. She expressed concern that nearly 40% of the organization's revenue stems from federal sources, which are earmarked for other services, not abortion-related care.

“Despite receiving 39 percent of its annual revenue from federal funds intended for essential health services,” Greene wrote, “Planned Parenthood is increasingly using its resources to offer abortions to its patients.” She argued that such expansion suggests a redirection of federal monies, something prohibited by existing legislation.

The attention also turned to the organization's role in gender-affirming care. Greene pointed out that an estimated 45 health centers affiliated with Planned Parenthood offer cross-sex hormone treatments, with some reportedly prescribing hormones to minors who are as young as 16 years old.

Parental Consent and Medical Oversight Questioned

According to Greene’s letter, while policies vary by location and state laws, some clinics do not consistently apply their guidelines regarding parental consent. She wrote that minors have reportedly received hormone therapy without substantial psychological or medical evaluation in certain cases.

In support of this claim, Greene alleged that some Planned Parenthood centers provide these services “with little to no medical or psychological evaluation,” raising concerns about both ethical and legal standards in such treatments. She further claimed that inconsistencies in internal policies could lead to the misuse of public funds.

Greene also criticized the way Planned Parenthood categorizes transgender services in their records, claiming that procedures such as hormone treatments are labeled as “other procedures.” She argued that this obscures the true scope and scale of such programs, making it difficult for watchdogs to properly monitor financial compliance.

Document Request and Legislative Context

As part of the subcommittee’s action, Greene requested detailed documentation from Planned Parenthood, covering the time frame from January 2020 to June 2025. The request includes financial records, service breakdowns, and internal policies related to parental consent and medical assessments.

The content of the letter stated, “Federal funds provided to Planned Parenthood via Title X, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) must be administered in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.” Greene emphasized transparency and oversight as key areas of interest for the investigation.

This move aligns with ongoing Republican efforts to reduce or eliminate federal funding for abortion providers. President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful, Bill” is part of this strategy, aimed at cutting federal ties to organizations that offer abortion-related services, including Planned Parenthood.

Organizational Response Still Pending

As of the time of publication, Planned Parenthood had not issued a comment in response to the investigation or Greene’s letter. The organization's silence leaves open questions about how it will respond to the inquiry or comply with the document request.

The Department of Government Efficiency subcommittee, tasked with reviewing how taxpayer funds are spent by organizations receiving federal support, has yet to confirm whether it will pursue hearings or introduce legislation based on its findings. The probe could shape future debates on reproductive health, gender care, and health care funding oversight.

While the investigation could expand depending on the documentation received, the subcommittee’s focus remains on determining if there have been violations of federal funding conditions. Until then, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are watching the case as it develops.
