Jimmy Carter Aims to Vote for Kamala Harris Amid Hospice Care, Grandson Reveals

PLAINS, Georgia - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, now 99 years old, is "holding on" with the goal of voting for Kamala Harris in the upcoming election, according to his grandson Jason Carter.

This surprising revelation was made during Jason's speech at the Democratic National Convention, where he provided an update on the former president's condition. Town & Country reports that despite his declining health, Carter remains determined to participate in the democratic process.

Jason Carter told convention attendees that his grandfather "can't wait" to vote for Harris and that he is persevering through his health challenges with this goal in mind. This statement comes as Jimmy Carter approaches his 100th birthday on October 1, 2024, with early voting in Georgia set to begin on October 15.

Carter's Ongoing Health Challenges And Hospice Care

The former president's determination to vote comes amid ongoing health challenges that have kept him in hospice care since February 2023.

Carter's decision to enter hospice care followed a series of short hospital stays, with the Carter Center announcing at the time that he had chosen to spend his remaining time at home with family rather than undergo additional medical interventions.

Over the past year and a half, updates on Carter's health have been infrequent. However, the Carter Center released a statement in February 2024, one year after Carter began receiving hospice care, expressing satisfaction that his decision had sparked important discussions about end-of-life care across the country.

Jason Carter has been the primary source of information regarding his grandfather's condition. In recent interviews, he has shared insights into the former president's physical state and spiritual journey as he approaches his final days.

Declining Physical Health But Strong Spirit

In May 2024, Jason offered an update on his grandfather's condition during the Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy.

He revealed that while Carter was still present and aware, his physical state had significantly diminished. Jason recounted a conversation with his grandfather, "I said, 'Pawpaw, people ask me how you're doing, and I say, I don't know.' And he said, 'well, I don't know myself.'"

Despite his physical limitations, Carter's spirit remains strong. Jason has emphasized his grandfather's resilience and faith throughout this challenging period.

In an interview with the New York Times, Jason shared:

One of the things that has driven home to me is there are things about life and the spirit that you just can't understand. I don't know what it's like for him right now. I don't know what it's like to face this moment in the way that he has been facing it for the last year. But that's been liberating for me to know that I just don't know. And that's OK.

Impact Of Rosalynn Carter's Passing

A significant moment in Carter's recent journey was the passing of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, in November 2023.

The former first lady died at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of mental health advocacy and public service. Jimmy Carter attended her funeral service, marking his only public appearance since entering hospice care.

Jason Carter spoke about his grandfather's presence at Rosalynn's funeral, saying:

He's coming to the end, and he's very, very physically diminished. But I think he was proud and happy that he was there for her till the very end, and he wasn't going to miss this for anything.

The loss of Rosalynn has undoubtedly had a profound impact on Jimmy Carter. The couple had been married for 77 years and were known for their enduring partnership in both personal and public life.

Carter's Continued Political Engagement

Despite his declining health, Jimmy Carter's desire to remain politically engaged is evident in his determination to vote in the upcoming election. This commitment to civic duty, even in his final days, is a testament to Carter's lifelong dedication to public service and political participation.

Jason Carter's announcement at the Democratic National Convention underscores the former president's ongoing interest in national affairs. It also highlights the Carter family's continued involvement in political discourse, carrying forward the legacy of public service that has defined their family for decades.

In conclusion, Jimmy Carter's determination to vote for Kamala Harris in the face of significant health challenges demonstrates his unwavering commitment to democracy and civic responsibility. As he approaches his centennial birthday, the former president continues to inspire with his resilience and engagement. His journey through this final stage of life has sparked important conversations about end-of-life care and serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of a life dedicated to public service and political participation.
