Joe, Jill Biden seek return to Democratic Party leadership roles: Report
In a strategic shift, former President Joe Biden is said to be making moves to lend his experience and support to fortify the Democratic Party, which is currently grappling with leadership challenges and the resurgence of Donald Trump.
In the wake of his presidency, Joe Biden -- along with wife Jill -- is apparently reengaging with politics and has a desire to assist in the Democratic Party's reorganization efforts, especially against Trump's political momentum, as the Daily Caller reports.
Biden's Journey from Presidency to Recent Resurgence
After serving as president, Joe Biden stepped back from the forefront of politics. His term concluded when he vacated the White House on Jan. 20. Since then, he has maintained a low profile, away from public political engagements until recent developments.
In response to the challenges faced by his party, and following his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, Biden has initiated steps to reengage with Democratic Party leadership.
Biden's absence from the 2024 race came after a disappointing debate performance and slipping poll numbers led to his decision to exit the campaign, which he announced on July 21, 2024.
Recognizing the shifts needed within the party, Biden met with Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin in February 2025. The meeting was centered around discussions on how Biden could contribute to regenerating the party’s dynamics and strategy moving forward.
Jill Biden Also Seeks Return
Jill Biden, alongside her husband, is also hoping to play a significant role in the Democratic Party's rebuilding process.
Her past role as first lady showcased her commitment to public service, which she plans to continue by supporting party efforts in various capacities.
A source close to Jill Biden mentioned, “She recognizes that serving in the capacities that she served is an honor and it comes with responsibilities to the party. And she’s prepared to help in any way she can.” This indicates a shared commitment in the Biden family to aid the Democratic Party establishment in regaining its footing.
Both Joe and Jill Biden are not only focusing on direct political engagement but also on literary contributions that could influence public opinion.
They are contemplating writing books, with Joe Biden particularly splitting his time between Delaware and Washington for consultations related to his memoir.
Bidens' Potential Impact Assessed
Joe Biden's decision to endorse Kamala Harris after his withdrawal from the race was a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party. Harris, who took up the mantle as the Democratic nominee, faced a difficult campaign, eventually losing to Donald Trump.
“She ran an extraordinary campaign with a very tough hand that was handed to her,” commented Mark Longabaugh, a political strategist, regarding Harris's efforts in an uphill battle. However, Longabaugh also critiqued, “The truth of the matter is, Biden should have stepped aside earlier and let the party put together a longer game plan.” This sentiment reflects criticism within the party regarding the timing of Biden's withdrawal.
The internal dissent following the election has led to a considerable vacuum in leadership within the Democratic Party. Recognizing this, discussions about who will lead the party in the future and potential candidacies for 2028 are intensifying.
Notwithstanding the challenges, there remains a faction within the party that holds deep respect and admiration for Joe Biden. “There are plenty of people in the Democratic Party who were very frustrated with how things played out last year, but there are plenty of people who still love Joe Biden,” said Alan Kessler, a prominent Democratic Party fundraiser.
Looking Forward: Democratic Party's Road to Recovery
Despite the mixed sentiments within the party, the overarching goal remains clear: to rebuild and establish a strong leadership capable of countering Republican advances. Kessler emphasized the necessity of refocusing, stating, “It’s time to move on with new leadership.”
This call for new leadership, however, does not diminish the role elder statesmen like Joe Biden can potentially play. With his vast experience and previous presidential tenure, Biden's involvement could provide crucial insights and stability as the party navigates these turbulent times.
The Democratic Party, at this juncture, faces a crucial period of introspection and restructuring. With former leaders like Joe and Jill Biden willing to step up once more, there is cautious optimism about overcoming the current challenges and gearing up for future electoral battles, redefining itself in an ever-evolving political landscape.
