Johnson warns of Democrat-led impeachment push if House flips in 2026

House Speaker Mike Johnson just dropped a bombshell that’s got conservatives rallying. On ABC’s “This Week,” the Louisiana Republican warned that Democrats could target President Donald Trump with impeachment if they seize the House in 2026. It’s a stark reminder of the high stakes in the upcoming midterms.

As reported by Breitbart News, Johnson appeared on the Sunday show to sound the alarm about the 2026 midterm elections, which will decide House control. He claimed Democrats would waste no time trying to impeach Trump in January 2027 if they win. The message? Republicans must hold the line.

“If the Democrats took over control of the House, I guarantee you that they would try to impeach President Trump in the first week,” Johnson said. That’s a bold prediction, but it’s not hard to see why he’s worried. Democrats have twice impeached Trump before, and their track record suggests they’d leap at another chance.

Stakes for the Midterms

Johnson’s warning isn’t just political posturing; it’s a call to action. He stressed that Republicans need to keep the House majority to back Trump’s agenda. Losing control could mean a legislative roadblock for conservative policies.

The Speaker didn’t mince words about the policy divide. He argued that Republican policies fuel economic growth, innovation, and job creation. Democratic policies, he implied, choke those very engines of prosperity.

“Our policies are better for human flourishing, they’re better for the U.S. economy,” Johnson told host Jonathan Karl. It’s a classic conservative pitch: free markets over government overreach. But with the midterms looming, the question is whether voters will buy it.

Elon Musk’s Role Questioned

Karl threw a curveball, asking about Elon Musk potentially funding challenges against Republicans who back a certain bill. Johnson sidestepped the specifics but tied Musk’s support to the broader conservative cause. It’s a delicate dance, given Musk’s influence and unpredictable streak.

Johnson insisted Musk knows Republican policies align with his goals of innovation and entrepreneurship. “He understands that our policies are better for everything that he’s involved in,” Johnson said. Translation: Musk’s wallet should stay with the GOP, tantrums or not.

But the Musk question hints at deeper tensions. If big donors start playing hardball, Republican unity could fray. Johnson’s job is to keep the coalition together while waving the Trump flag high.

Impeachment as a Political Weapon

Johnson’s impeachment warning isn’t just about Trump—it’s about the state of politics. He painted a picture of Democrats using impeachment as a cudgel, not a last resort. It’s a tactic conservatives argue undermines the will of voters.

“That would be a disaster for the country, for our public policy, for the economy,” Johnson said of a potential impeachment. He’s not wrong to highlight the chaos it would unleash. Impeachment trials grind Washington to a halt, and the economy often pays the price.

Yet, Democrats might argue they’d have cause. Trump’s presidency has always been a lightning rod, and a House flip could embolden his critics. Still, Johnson’s point lands: another impeachment would be less about justice and more about political theater.

Conservative Vision for 2026

Johnson’s bigger argument is about giving Trump a full four years. He believes a Republican House is essential to enact policies that boost jobs and innovation. Without it, Trump’s agenda could stall before it starts.

The Speaker’s vision is unapologetically conservative: less regulation, more growth. It’s a message that resonates with the MAGA base, who see Trump as a fighter against a progressive agenda. But moderates might need more convincing.

As the 2026 midterms approach, Johnson’s warning sets the tone. Republicans must unify to protect Trump and their economic priorities. If they falter, Democrats could turn Washington into a circus again.
