Justice Department Reveals Truth Behind 1921 Tulsa Massacre

The Justice Department has unveiled disturbing facts about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, describing it as a systematic attack driven by racial animosity.

The DOJ report sheds new light on the event, marking it as a premeditated military-style operation against the Black community in Greenwood, as Just the News reports.

On Friday, the Department of Justice concluded its probe into one of the darkest chapters of American history -- the Tulsa Race Massacre -- through its commitment to the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Act. This investigation, announced last September, aimed to uncover truths buried for over a century.

The massacre, which took place between May 31 and June 1, 1921, saw thousands of white residents destroy the prosperous Greenwood district, known for its affluent Black community.

Triggered by baseless accusations against a Black man, this event escalated following attempts by Greenwood's Black residents to fend off a lynching, which led to an outbreak of violence.

Detailed Examination of Greenwood's Destruction

Kristen Clarke, the assistant attorney general of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, highlighted the severity and coordination of the racially motivated attack.

According to Clarke, the Tulsa Race Massacre was not simply a mob uprising but resembled an assault with military precision aimed at annihilating a thriving community.

The report paints a harrowing picture of the violence that occurred, involving widespread destruction of property and significant loss of life among the Black citizens of Greenwood. Over 24 hours, mobs arrested more than 6,000 Black residents and murdered hundreds.

The Department of Justice emphasized that the scale and cruelty of the massacre had no precedent in terms of racial violence in the United States.

The report characterizes the massacre as an event marked by barbarity, racist hostility, and complete devastation of Greenwood.

Justice Department's First Official Acknowledgment

This review by the DOJ represents the first time the federal government has officially recognized the extent and intent behind the Tulsa Race Massacre. Before this, there had been no formal admission or detailed federal examination concerning the attacks.

"Until this day, the Justice Department has not spoken publicly about this race massacre or officially accounted for the horrific events that transpired in Tulsa," said Clarke in her statement. She underlined the significance of bringing these findings to light, despite the challenges posed by historical distance and lack of living witnesses.

No legal actions arise from this examination due to the statute of limitations expiring and the death of all directly involved individuals. Nevertheless, the Department emphasized the importance of documenting this stark episode, honoring the memory of the victims, and acknowledging the survivors' testimonies.

Landmark Report on Shameful Racial Violence

The findings not only detail the attack's orchestration but also reflect the DOJ's dedication to pursuing historical justice. Clarke remarked, "This report reflects our commitment to the pursuit of justice and truth, even in the face of insurmountable obstacles."

Clarke also recognized the resilience and courage of Tulsa's survivors: "We issue this report with recognition of the courageous survivors who continue to share their testimonies, acknowledgment of those who tragically lost their lives, and appreciation for the advocates pushing us to never forget this tragic chapter of America’s history."

The report ultimately serves as a crucial step in acknowledging and learning from the past atrocities committed against African Americans. It calls for continued efforts in civil rights advancements, shedding light on undiscussed parts of American historical narratives and ensuring such tragedies are never repeated.

Implications for Future Civil Rights Efforts

In its conclusion, the DOJ's report underlines the ongoing relevance of the Tulsa Massacre in discussions about race and justice in America. It highlights how the events of 1921 continue to resonate today, informing conversations about racial inequality and the need for comprehensive historical acknowledgment and education.

The release of this detailed review hopes to foster a broader understanding and reflection on the systemic racial issues that have shaped and continue to influence American society. The Tulsa Race Massacre, as presented in this report, stands as a somber reminder of the depths of racial animosity and the importance of confronting these issues head-on.
