Lawsuit alleges pastor's daughter sexually abused church member
The lawsuit, filed on April 14 in Baltimore City Circuit Court, details how Capello, now in his 40s, was allegedly sexually assaulted by Pastor Love's daughter. The assaults purportedly started during a mission trip in 1995 and persisted until Capello was around 16 years old.
Early Encounters and the Church's Alleged Negligence
According to the legal documents, Capello was deeply influenced by the church's teachings from a very young age. The lawsuit claims this influence created a power dynamic that was exploited during the repeated assaults.
The church, led by youth Pastor John A. Love, is under scrutiny for allegedly failing to protect Capello despite being aware of the gravity of the situation. It’s claimed that the church and Pastor Love did not take appropriate actions to prevent or address the misconduct.
Capello alleges that he was misled into believing his parents were informed and accepting of the ongoing situation, a deception purportedly orchestrated by Pastor Love himself.
Church's Response and Commitment to Investigation
On April 18, the church issued a statement acknowledging the lawsuit but noted that they had not yet been officially served. The statement emphasized the church’s dedication to uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability.
“We are aware of a lawsuit that has been filed against GGWO regarding allegations of mishandling disclosures of sexual assault... We remain firmly committed to the truth and accountability, and GRACE has full discretion to investigate and report all allegations of sexual abuse or mishandling at GGWO,” the church officials explained.
Church leaders also highlighted their ongoing commitment to transparency and integrity throughout the investigation process, which is being conducted by GRACE, an external body empowered to scrutinize and report on all allegations.
Broader Issues of Misconduct Within the Church
This isn't the first instance of misconduct allegations faced by the Greater Grace World Outreach Church. The institution has previously revoked the ordinations of two other pastors following separate accusations of sexual misconduct.
This pattern raises concerns about the broader practices and the environment within the church. The revocations suggest a possible acknowledgment of systemic issues that may extend beyond individual cases.
As for Capello, his legal action not only seeks justice for himself but also aims to spotlight potentially widespread issues within the church that could affect other members.
The Road Ahead for Greater Grace World Outreach Church
The church has promised a thorough investigation into the allegations, a process that will test its commitment to transparency and accountability. With the lawsuit now looming, the church’s responses and actions in the coming months will be closely monitored by both the congregation and the public.
This case adds another layer to the ongoing discussion about sexual misconduct within religious institutions, highlighting the challenges of balancing authority, trust, and the protection of vulnerable members.
The outcome of this lawsuit and the investigation by GRACE could have significant implications not only for the individuals directly involved but also for the reputation and operational practices of the Greater Grace World Outreach Church.
