Longtime Alabama pastor retires after family tragedy

After four decades of ministry, turmoil follows a family crime for a revered pastor.

Pastor Allan Kendrick’s retirement follows harrowing events, including his grandson’s arrest for a quintuple murder at his home, the Christian Post reported.

Allan Kendrick, who has led Oasis of Praise—a church in McCalla, Alabama, that has undergone numerous name changes since he took over in 1983—announced that he would leave his life in ministry. He made this decision after taking a leave of absence on December 18, 2024, due to intense personal and public challenges.

A pivotal moment in Kendrick’s pastoral career happened on July 18, 2024, when authorities charged his grandson, Brandon Allan Kendrick II, with the capital murders of five family members, including Kendrick's wife and four children. This horrific crime took place inside Kendrick's own home in the West Blocton area of Bibb County, Alabama.

Pastor's Home Becomes Scene of Grave Tragedy

Following the tragedy, Allan Kendrick faced significant public scrutiny and distress. Some accused him of contributing to the crime, with false accusations of him having facilitated or even witnessed the murders, all of which he vehemently denied. These allegations compounded the grief of losing close family members under such brutal circumstances.

Additionally, Kendrick denied past accusations concerning sexual abuse and covering up abuse within the church. The charges stirred controversy and further speculation about his leadership during an already tumultuous time.

Security concerns around the sensitive situation led to Kendrick's absence from the funeral services of his great-grandchildren, a poignant illustration of the complexities this family tragedy imposed on his life.

Church Reacts to Spiritual Leader's Trials

The response within Kendrick’s church community was filled with mixed emotions. While some expressed disbelief and shock over the events, others showed stark relief when Kendrick announced his retirement. Their reactions reflect the wide-ranging impact of the incident on the local community and churchgoers.

Kendrick’s church, meanwhile, approved a retirement package valued at $100,000, signaling respect and acknowledgment for his long service despite the recent ordeals. This gesture by Oasis of Praise hints at the complicated layers of tragedy and leadership intertwined in Kendrick’s story.

During a moving Sunday service, Kendrick shared an account of the events leading up to his retirement. His retelling described how his wife showed extraordinary courage by disarming their grandson during the attack, an act he credits to divine intervention, saying, "It was only by the grace of God that my wife and I [were not killed]."

A Personal Testimony Amid Crisis

The scene described by Kendrick during the service was dramatic and harrowing: his wife managed to disarm their grandson while facing immense personal danger. This story further highlighted the profound personal and spiritual battles Kendrick endured.

He openly expressed his fatigue and longing for peace, saying, "I’m just tired." This simple yet powerful statement encapsulated his current emotional state and his need to step away from his life’s work.

In subsequent remarks, Kendrick reflected on his spiritual journey and the challenges he faced, not just physically but also within his community. “People accused me of enabling or even witnessing the crime,” he shared, illustrating the gravity of public speculation he had to confront.

Reflections on Faith and Endurance

Kendrick’s ordeal appears to have fortified his faith, as evidenced by his final messages to his congregation. He warned them about the perils of evil and the importance of being spiritually prepared. His words, "Better get your heart right with God because you may be the next one on national news," served as a solemn reminder of the unpredictability and challenges of life.

"Don’t you think that if you don’t have Jesus, you're going to walk out of here and everything's going to be cool because you ain't no match for the devil," Kendrick cautioned, highlighting his belief in the protective power of faith in times of crisis.

Despite the controversies and the tragic circumstances leading to his retirement, Kendrick’s experience and subsequent departure from pastoral work remain a poignant reminder of the personal impacts that such public figures endure. His story underscores a complex interplay between personal tragedy, public role, and spiritual leadership.
