Lucy Markovic of 'Australia's Next Top Model' fame passes away at 27

Australian model Lucy Markovic, known for her stint on Australia's Next Top Model, passed away due to a rare brain condition called arteriovenous malformation (AVM) at age 27.

Markovic's representatives and admirers on social media announced the sad news, confirming her peaceful passing surrounded by family, as NBC News reports.

Arising to fame as a runner-up in the ninth season of Australia's Next Top Model in 2015, Lucy Markovic quickly became a notable name in the fashion industry. Her captivating presence on the show paved the way for future opportunities with prestigious fashion houses such as Armani, Versace, and Victoria Beckham.

On Thursday, the fashion world was struck with the heart-wrenching news announced by her agency, Elite Model Management New York City.

The announcement clarified that Lucy had succumbed to a rare and severe brain condition known as arteriovenous malformation, which involves an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain or spinal cord.

Leading up to her demise, Lucy bravely disclosed her medical condition in March through an Instagram story post. She revealed she was scheduled for surgery to address a golf ball-sized AVM, which was initially set for March 26 but had been postponed to April 2.

Tributes pour in

Following the announcement of her passing, her Instagram was filled with tributes lauding her dreams and aspirations.

One poignant tribute mentioned her ambition to become a Victoria's Secret Angel and hinted at her now being a celestial "angel," admired by others in heaven.

Lucy's sister, Jelena Markovic, and fashion icons like Donatella Versace were among those who publicly expressed their grief.

Versace shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram story paired with a photo of Lucy, simply stating, "Rest in peace, beautiful girl."

The management company's tribute highlighted not only Lucy's professional accomplishments but her personal qualities as well: "Her smile and laughter could light up a room... She loved to dance, she really shined."

Markovic's impact recalled

Despite her short life, Lucy's impact on the fashion world was significant. Not only did she grace the runway for top brands, but she was also in the process of developing a fitness app, aiming to bridge her passion for fashion and fitness.

Her elegance, warmth, and genuine laughter were frequently highlighted by colleagues and friends. Her presence brought a unique blend of professional acumen and personal warmth, making her a beloved figure in the fashion community.

An Instagram story on her account made by an unidentified friend or family member conveyed a final farewell: "I regret to inform you that Lucy has passed. She was at peace. Me, her mother, and my mother were present with her. We ask you to please give us space in these hard times."

Star's enduring legacy

Lucy Markovic's career trajectory was steep and promising. Her work with globally recognized brands positioned her as a future icon in the industry. Moreover, her bravery in facing her health struggles publicly provided inspiration to many.

Elite Model Management's statement encapsulated the essence of Lucy's spirit: "Modeling was one of Lucy’s dreams, and we are deeply honored to have been part of that journey with her... But more than that, she brought herself -- her warmth, her laughter, her light."

Loved for more than her modeling, Lucy's dream and determination hinted at a bright future, cruelly cut short by her untimely death.

She leaves behind a community of friends, family, and fans who remember her not only as a model but as a vibrant, loving person whose light will continue to shine in their memories.
