Majority of Catholic voters back Trump’s immigration enforcement, poll finds
A majority of Catholic voters are throwing their weight behind President Donald Trump’s firm stance on immigration enforcement, according to a new national poll.
An EWTN News and RealClear Opinion Research survey revealed that more than half of Catholic voters support large-scale detention and deportation of unauthorized migrants, showing alignment with Trump’s immigration agenda as a driving force in his recent electoral support, as Breitbart reports.
Conducted between November 9 and 11, the poll sampled 1,000 Catholic voters, uncovering that 54% favor the broad removal of unauthorized immigrants, while only 30% oppose the policy, and 17% remain undecided.
Support Rooted in Growing Concern for Border Control
The poll results paint a clear picture: Catholic voters are increasingly prioritizing border control and national security over partisan talking points about migrant sanctuary or open-border idealism. Many respondents attributed their support for Trump to ongoing concerns about how illegal immigration affects their local communities.
“We desperately need immigration reform, we desperately need to control our borders,” one Catholic voter told EWTN News, summing up a sentiment that resonated across many poll responses. The overwhelming sense is that the current system isn’t just broken—it’s ignored.
That concern was compounded by imagery and stories flooding the news cycle: open border crossings, trafficking tragedies, and overwhelmed services. Breitbart News reported that such stark portrayals gave Trump considerable “political fuel” during his successful White House comeback.
Religious Teachings Balance Compassion With Lawfulness
The Catechism of the Catholic Church doesn't shy away from complexity, teaching that while wealthy nations should do what they can to welcome foreigners, immigrants must also “obey [the] laws and assist in carrying civic burdens” of their host country. The text emphasizes mutual responsibility, not unilateral amnesty.
That message seems to have struck a chord with voters who want to both uphold their faith and preserve stability. Many Catholics appear to believe the government has a “moral duty” to manage migration within legal bounds, a principle recently affirmed by U.S. Catholic Bishops, as reported by Breitbart News.
The Church’s balanced view on immigration, far removed from the extremes of activist sloganeering, offers Catholic voters an ethical framework to support stricter enforcement without abandoning compassion.
Exit Polls Show Swing Toward Trump
That ethical alignment appears to have had real-world political consequences. Exit polls from the most recent election showed Trump carrying the Catholic vote by a 15-point margin—a decisive swing that contributed to his return to the Oval Office.
Trump’s campaign leaned heavily into issues like border security and immigration reform, and the data suggests that Catholic voters were listening. The poll serves as another piece of evidence that practical, enforcement-based immigration policies are resonating across religious lines.
It’s not just rhetoric. Since Trump’s return to office in January 2025, more than 2.5 million unauthorized migrants have reportedly exited the United States—a figure that speaks to the administration’s seriousness of purpose.
Previous Administration's Warnings Resurface
Part of Trump’s momentum may have come from frustration over the previous administration’s inaction. According to Breitbart News, President Joe Biden’s own advisors had warned in 2020 that parts of his immigration plan could lead to “chaos.” He pressed ahead anyway, and some voters never forgot.
While legacy media outlets tried to minimize the consequences, Catholic voters appear to have seen the impact firsthand—in their parishes, neighborhoods, and classrooms. Their growing support for immigration enforcement underscores not just approval of Trump’s policies, but disapproval of what came before.
And that shift isn’t just political. It’s moral. It's grounded in a nuanced understanding of immigration that respects both the dignity of the migrant and the rights of a sovereign nation to determine lawful entry. That’s the kind of balance sound policy—and real compassion—demands.
