Make-A-Wish child meets CJ Stroud due to shared Christian faith

When 12-year-old John Sperring finally met his NFL hero, it wasn’t just an exciting sports moment — it was a deeply emotional and spiritual connection.

Breitbart reported that Sperring, a Make-A-Wish participant born with a critical heart condition, chose to meet Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud because of the athlete's humility and strong Christian beliefs.

Sperring was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare congenital defect where the left side of the heart does not develop properly. He has endured multiple surgeries and continues battling the condition in the hospital. Despite the hardship, his faith remains strong, and it led him to someone he deeply admires.

Child’s Faith Leads To Unforgettable Wish

Through ESPN’s “My Wish” series, which documents special moments granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the young fan expressed his desire to meet Stroud. While some children ask to go to an amusement park or meet a celebrity, Sperring made it clear that his choice was based on shared Christian values and admiration for character, not just football talent.

“He’s a very humble player and always puts God first in his interviews,” Sperring said, explaining why Stroud stood out. For the youngster, seeing the NRG Stadium from his hospital window added a deeper personal connection to the team and its quarterback. Speaking to Stroud at their meeting, he said, “From my hospital, I could see NRG [Stadium], and you’re a great Christian.”

The heartwarming exchange unfolded on camera, capturing a hug between the two that brought both to tears. Stroud, visibly moved, responded, “You’re gonna make me cry, bro.”

A Jersey Signed With Scripture And Prayer

As part of the visit, Stroud presented Sperring with a signed Texans jersey. More than just a signature, the quarterback included thoughtful Bible scriptures on the shirt: Psalms 34:15-18, Philippians 4:6-7, and Jeremiah 29:11, centering the gift on faith and hope.

The personalized message from Stroud read, “To John! Go Texans!! Praying for you, Buddy!” The simple yet heartfelt dedication reflected the caring side of Stroud that has become well-known among fans and peers.

Stroud also gave words of encouragement in person, commending the 12-year-old’s enduring faith and reminding him to maintain it. “You already had me tearing up earlier,” he said. “Twelve years old, you love Jesus, I love that, man. Keep that child-like faith.”

Stroud's Faith Journey Publicly Shared

Stroud, now in his third NFL season, has been candid about his Christian beliefs from the very beginning of his career. During his rookie year, he made headlines by giving credit to his faith during interviews, stating that his purpose in the league was to “play for the glory of God.”

By November 2023, the quarterback shared that life had presented challenges both on the field and in his personal life. Nevertheless, he credited his relationship with Jesus Christ for helping him endure and find success during those stormy periods.

“These last couple weeks, I’ve been up and down,” Stroud said at the time. “I’ve been going through a lot on and off the field. But when you give your life to the Lord, man, he gives you opportunities, and it’s what you do with it.”

Mutual Inspiration Between Player And Fan

During their meeting, it became clear that inspiration flowed both ways. As much as Sperring admired Stroud, the NFL star also drew strength from the young boy’s faith and perseverance.

Stroud told the boy, “You make me want to play harder,” underscoring the bond that had formed in just a short time. The quarterback didn’t just show up to fulfill a fan request — he connected on a spiritual level, turning it into a meaningful exchange that went beyond football.

Sperring’s strength and attitude reflect that impact. He expressed optimism about his recovery, saying, “Praying to God that He would heal me quickly, and I can get back.”

A Memory That Transcends Football

The moment was more than just a celebrity meet-and-greet. It illustrated how shared values can bring people together in powerful ways, especially during difficult times. Make-A-Wish programs often result in joyful memories, but this one demonstrated how faith can be just as influential as fandom.

Sperring’s experience will be remembered not just for meeting a favorite NFL player, but for reinforcing the beliefs that give him strength during his medical journey. For Stroud, it was a reminder of why he plays — not for fame, but to uplift and inspire others.

As the Texans head into a new season, this emotional encounter serves as a powerful example of hope, resilience, and the unexpected ways lives can touch each other through faith and kindness.
