Marc Fogel's 95-year-old mom celebrates his return from Russian detention
Marc Fogel, the 95-year-old American schoolteacher released from a Russian prison, recently reunited with his family in the U.S. after years of fraught diplomatic negotiations.
According to the Christian Post, Marc Fogel, an American once detained in Russia on drug trafficking charges for having medical marijuana, has returned home following U.S. government intervention.
From Pennsylvania, Marc Fogel was detained in Russia since 2021, after he was caught possessing marijuana prescribed legally by a doctor. Russian authorities sentenced him to 14 years in a harsh penal colony, sparking widespread concern and diplomatic efforts for his release.
Unexpected Call from Moscow Airport
Marc's ordeal began to unfold towards a resolution when he made an unexpected phone call to his mother, Malphine Fogel. Instead of the usual somber updates from prison, he informed her of his impending return from Moscow airport, surprising and overwhelming her with joy.
"He just said, 'I'm in the Moscow airport'—he usually calls from the prison—and I said, 'What are you doing there?' And he said, 'I'm waiting for a plane to take me to Washington, D.C.,' which was unbelievable," Malphine recalled. She expressed how the sudden news made her dizzy with relief and happiness.
Historic Day at the White House
Marc's return was not just a personal victory but also a public celebration. Arriving at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on a snowy night, he was warmly draped in an American flag during a subsequent appearance at the White House. There, he addressed reporters, describing his feelings of immense fortune and surrealism.
With high-profile figures like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and House Speaker Mike Johnson in attendance, Marc's homecoming was marked by significant media attention and governmental acknowledgment. He expressed his gratitude and shock, remarking, "I feel like the luckiest man on Earth right now. I'm a middle-class schoolteacher who's now in a dream world."
Lobbied for Release at a Trump Rally
Before his release, Marc's mother had been fiercely advocating for her son. She lobbied during a Trump campaign event, which coincidentally also became the scene of an attempted assassination of President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. This incident highlighted the intense political backdrop against which her appeals were made.
Reflecting on these chaotic circumstances, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, "But that day, before the rally, President Trump promised Marc's mother when he returned to the White House, he would bring her son home. God saved President Trump's life on that day in Butler, Pennsylvania. And now, Marc Fogul is back home safely with his family as a result. God is good."
International Diplomacy and Bilateral Discussions
The negotiations for Marc’s release involved complex diplomatic exchanges, culminating in an agreement that also facilitated the release of a Russian citizen detained in the U.S. In gratitude and acknowledgment, President Trump thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his cooperation in this matter, sharing insights into their comprehensive discussion that ranged from Ukraine to artificial intelligence.
Trump shared in a social media post about their conversation, reflecting on both nations' historical collaboration during World War II and enunciating hopes for future cooperation. He noted, "We both reflected on the Great History of our Nations, and the fact that we fought so successfully together in World War II, remembering, that Russia lost tens of millions of people, and we, likewise, lost so many! We each talked about the strengths of our respective Nations and the great benefit that we will someday have in working together."
Family and a Nation Begin to Heal
The Fogel family released a statement expressing their boundless relief and gratitude as Marc transitioned from detainee to returnee. "We are beyond grateful, relieved, and overwhelmed that after more than three years of detention, our father, husband, and son, Marc Fogel, is finally coming home," they stated. They acknowledged President Trump's role, emphasizing that, "Thanks to the unwavering leadership of President Trump, Marc will soon be back on American soil, free where he belongs."
Yet, perhaps the most poignant perspective came from Marc himself at the White House clad in the national flag, symbolizing not just his return but also the collective effort and emotional journey of his family, diplomats, and leaders who worked tirelessly to ensure his safe return.
