Measles exposure warning issued after traveler visits multiple Washington sites

A recent measles exposure linked to a Canadian traveler has sparked a public health warning across multiple communities in Washington state.

Public health officials say the individual visited numerous public places between April 30 and May 3 while contagious, prompting a call for residents to verify their measles vaccination status and stay alert for symptoms, Fox News reported.

The traveler, whose immunization history is currently unknown, was diagnosed with measles after traveling through various parts of Washington. Health officials have identified potential exposure sites in Renton, Bellevue, Seattle, Everett, and Woodinville, affecting a wide array of public venues ranging from restaurants to airports.

Measles Threat Lingers at Multiple Public Venues

According to King County health authorities, this individual passed through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, a central travel hub, during their stay. Other high-traffic locations include eateries like Genki Sushi in Renton, Pho Mignon in Kirkland, and Spicy Style of Sichuan, along with retail locations such as Home Depot in Redmond, Dunn Lumber in Rento,n and Uwajimaya Seattle Asian Market.

Additional destinations on the exposure list include the Topgolf Renton sports bar, Kobo at HIGO art gallery, Stoup Brewing, and the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery, three unnamed fitness centers, as well as a hotel where the traveler stayed. Each location presents the possibility of measles transmission, given the virus’s ability to remain infectious in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left.

Highly Contagious Measles Can Spread Before Symptoms

Measles is a highly transmissible virus that can spread even before visible symptoms, such as a rash, emerge. The disease is typically passed through respiratory droplets, making enclosed or crowded public spaces particularly vulnerable. Health officials are alerting anyone who was in the same locations during the specified time frame to monitor closely for symptoms.

Common signs include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, typically followed by a blotchy rash that starts on the face and spreads downward. Because measles can mimic other viral infections in its early stages, health professionals are urging anyone unsure about their immunity to seek advice promptly.

Public Health – Seattle and King County have confirmed that this current measles case is not connected to any previous local cases. Nevertheless, they continue to stress the importance of community awareness as the virus can spread rapidly among those unvaccinated or with weakened immunity.

Local Residents Urged to Verify Immunization

So far in 2025, five cases involving Washington residents have been confirmed. Additionally, two other individuals from outside the state, not connected to this latest case, have also been identified as infected with measles during visits to the region.

Meagan Kay, medical epidemiologist for the county’s public health department, emphasized the urgency with which people should respond. “With over 1,000 cases reported so far this year nationally, 2025 is on track to have the highest number of measles cases in the U.S. since the early 1990s,” she said.

“It’s an important time to check your vaccination status,” she added. “If you aren’t protected, getting vaccinated now can help reduce further spread of the illness during what’s shaping up to be a significant year for measles outbreaks.”

Officials Say Vaccine Remains Most Effective Defense

Health experts continue to highlight that the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is a highly effective and recommended method for preventing the disease. Two doses are typically required for full protection, and most people who receive them are considered immune.

Those most at risk of complications from infection include young children, pregnant individuals, and people with compromised immune systems. While the measles virus can cause severe health issues such as pneumonia and brain swelling in rare cases, it is largely preventable through widespread vaccination efforts.

In light of the recent exposure event, residents who believe they may have crossed paths with the infected traveler are advised to contact a healthcare provider immediately if they develop symptoms and to avoid public gatherings to prevent further potential spread.

Authorities Trace Possible Exposure Locations Statewide

Local officials have focused their response on complete contact tracing and notifying individuals who may have been present at any of the exposure sites during the specific time frames. These measures aim to isolate potential new cases and reduce ongoing transmission risks in the affected communities.

Public health representatives also note that the airborne nature of measles allows the virus to linger even after an infected person leaves, increasing the potential for community transmission. Many of the listed locations are high-traffic areas, intensifying the need for swift public cooperation.

With potential exposure occurring in both urban centers and suburban settings, authorities hope to educate residents on how measles spreads and the value of vaccination, especially ahead of the summer travel season.

Public Health Response Prioritizes Community Education

The measles warning serves as a reminder of the importance of routine immunization and timely outbreak response. As cases climb nationally, local departments are stepping up their public awareness campaigns.

Officials in King County plan to continue updating the list of exposure sites and timeline information as investigations progress. They urge affected residents and visitors to remain vigilant over the next few weeks, watch for early symptoms, and take preventive steps.

“We want to bring the public's attention to how quickly and easily measles can spread and encourage protective action," said Kay. “Vaccination and awareness are the most powerful tools we have to contain this outbreak and keep our communities healthy.”
