Meghan Markle's new Netflix series faces low viewer ratings

The Duchess of Sussex's latest Netflix venture "With Love, Meghan" has drawn disappointing viewership numbers.

According to Fox News, only 526,000 households tuned in during its first five days of release.

These numbers mark a significant decline from her previous Netflix success, "Harry & Meghan," which attracted 2.1 million households upon its debut in 2022. The stark contrast in viewership highlights the challenging transition Meghan Markle faces as she attempts to rebrand herself from royal insider to lifestyle guru.

Lifestyle content fails to match royal intrigue

Royal experts and media analysts point to a fundamental disconnect between Markle's new creative direction and audience expectations.

The show's premise, which features the duchess cooking, entertaining, and gardening in Montecito, represents a dramatic departure from the explosive revelations that characterized her earlier Netflix documentary with Prince Harry.

Kinsey Schofield, who hosts the "To Di For Daily" podcast, suggests that Markle's attempt to reinvent herself has fallen flat with viewers. The lifestyle format, focusing on cooking demonstrations and home entertainment tips, lacks the compelling drama that initially drew audiences to the Sussex narrative.

Industry watchers note that the streaming numbers reflect a broader pattern of diminishing returns for Sussex-led content on Netflix. Recent projects including "Live To Lead" and "Heart of Invictus" failed to crack the platform's top 10 listings, raising questions about the couple's ability to maintain viewer interest beyond royal-focused content.

Expert analysis reveals viewer disconnect

British broadcaster Helena Chard offered a harsh assessment of the situation, suggesting that both Harry and Meghan lack the natural charisma needed to sustain entertainment programming. She explains:

The transition from Queen of Victimhood and score-settling to Betty Crocker is going to require a lot more than store-bought peanut butter pretzels

The challenge of authenticity emerges as a recurring theme in expert analysis. Critics argue that Markle's attempt to position herself as a lifestyle authority feels forced and disconnected from her public persona as a former royal family member.

Netflix partnership faces crucial test

The streaming giant's decision to partner with the Sussexes in 2020 represented a significant investment in the couple's potential to generate compelling content.

With Season 2 of "With Love, Meghan" scheduled for fall release, industry experts suggest this could be a make-or-break moment for the partnership.

Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal expert, notes that the simultaneous filming of both seasons may prove problematic, as it prevented producers from incorporating feedback from the first season's reception. This decision could impact the show's ability to course-correct and better align with viewer preferences.

Future ventures and brand expansion

Despite the lukewarm reception, Markle continues to expand her media presence. Her newest venture, a podcast titled "Confessions of a Female Founder," is set to debut on April 8 through Lemonada Media.

The eight-episode series will feature conversations with female entrepreneurs about the challenges of building brands.

Additionally, Markle's lifestyle brand, As Ever, plans to launch in spring 2025. The venture will include product partnerships with Netflix stores, representing another test of her ability to translate royal celebrity into commercial success.

Looking ahead at Markle's media journey

The transformation from member of the British royal family to lifestyle content creator has proven more challenging than anticipated for Meghan Markle.

Her Netflix series "With Love, Meghan" attracted just over a quarter of the viewers who tuned in for her previous documentary about royal life, highlighting the difficulty of maintaining audience engagement without royal drama.

As Markle prepares to launch multiple new ventures, including a podcast and lifestyle brand, questions remain about her ability to capture public interest beyond the context of royal controversies. The success or failure of these upcoming projects could determine the future of her partnership with Netflix and her broader media career trajectory.
