Michael Youssef transitions to global ministry as son steps into pulpit

In a generational shift rippling through one of Atlanta’s most influential churches, Dr. Michael Youssef has announced he is stepping down as senior pastor to focus on global evangelism.

After nearly four decades at the helm of the Church of the Apostles, Youssef is handing the pulpit to his son Jonathan while preparing to take on a full-time role leading his international ministry, Leading The Way, as CBN reports.

Youssef founded the Church of the Apostles in 1987 with just 28 adults, growing it into a congregation of more than 3,000. That kind of growth can’t be chalked up to man alone—it takes deep faith, bold leadership, and a refusal to dilute the message for modern sensibilities.

Jonathan Youssef to Lead the Next Chapter

The transition had been in the works for several years, indicating planning rather than a hasty power hand-off. Jonathan Youssef, 41, has spent years under his father’s guidance getting ready for this moment, bringing continuity to a congregation shaped by decades of theological clarity and pastoral strength.

In a YouTube announcement shared alongside his wife Elizabeth, Dr. Youssef made it clear he wasn’t retiring—but rather reassigning his focus to more urgent global missions. True to form, his decision was not made out of weariness but from a drive to push harder where the harvest is ripest.

“I will be passing the baton in the Church of the Apostles to my son Jonathan,” Youssef said in the video. “I will be having an opportunity to travel throughout the country…as well as our overseas crusades for evangelism.”

Global Evangelism at Full Throttle

Leading The Way, the media-driven ministry Youssef founded, has ballooned into a spiritual lifeline for millions—boasting a reach of over 260 million households worldwide. Its expansion coincides with new crusades, digital missions, and broadcasts penetrating regions the mainstream church all too often avoids—like Northern Africa, the Middle East, and majority-Muslim nations.

Through KINGDOM SAT, their satellite broadcast, Youssef’s team has bypassed bureaucratic roadblocks and censorship barriers, delivering the Gospel directly into homes where access to Christianity is often suppressed or criminalized. It’s the kind of spiritual boldness that once defined American missions—before the message became more about feelings than truth.

“Now that God has raised my son Jonathan to lead The Church of The Apostles… I will be devoting my full attention to Leading The Way,” Youssef added, emphasizing his desire to walk boldly through the ministry doors that remain open while they still can.

Results That Transcend Borders and Risk

In 2023, the ministry held a Gospel crusade in Egypt that drew 17,000 attendees, with over 7,800 accepting Christ. During a spike in regional conflict and instability, Youssef still traveled to the region, unshaken by fear or compromise. That’s the kind of conviction the modern church could stand to relearn.

“Can you imagine an announcement made that the evangelist is not coming because he is concerned about the situation in the Middle East?” Youssef said. “What kind of a God do I worship? I am going no matter what.”

That refusal to cower in the face of danger has borne fruit. Converts from Gaza, Morocco, and other countries have shared testimonies of walking away from radicalism and toward Christ after watching KINGDOM SAT—no celebrity pastor fanfare—just frontline faith and unfiltered truth.

Faith Over Fear, Clarity Over Compromise

One viewer from Gaza, a former Muslim named Ahmed, described how the channel showed him a different side of Jesus: “After comparing Jesus’ teaching to the Islamic beliefs, I saw the beauty of Jesus Christ. I have decided to follow Him.” His words echoed many more stories that seldom make the evening news but are transforming lives nonetheless.

Another man from Morocco shared an equally powerful message: “I was a radical Muslim…After watching The KINGDOM SAT, I wanted to tell you that I have decided to follow Jesus.” The impact is real, measurable, and growing despite resistance from both outside and inside the church establishment.

Dr. Youssef is not walking away from his local church family altogether—he will remain involved in an emeritus role. The title of “Founding Rector Emeritus” maintains his spiritual and strategic presence while allowing Jonathan space to lead.

Continuity Meets Urgency in Ministry Shift

While some American pastors are spending millions on light shows and Instagram ads, Youssef seems more concerned with the deeper work. Leading The Way continues its AWAKE America prayer movement, produces evangelistic commercials under “Finding True Peace,” and runs crusades aimed precisely where the Gospel is least welcome but most needed.

Youssef’s parting sentiment carried a clear message: seize the moment while doors remain open. “We don’t know how long the door is going to remain open…So I’m really putting my foot on the accelerator now,” he said. That’s not anxiety—it’s apostolic urgency, the kind feared by complacent institutions everywhere.

In this next season, Youssef is asking for one thing above all: prayer. “We need your prayers more than ever,” he emphasized. Judging by the ministry’s track record, those prayers are being answered every single day—often in the very places that many have written off as unreachable.
