Milley faces Pentagon probe over past communications with China

Gen. Mark Milley, former Joint Chiefs chairman, is now under investigation by the Pentagon's inspector general following serious allegations by retired Lt. Col. Tony Schaffer.

The Pentagon inquiry aims to assess Gen. Milley's actions during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol unrest and his interactions with Chinese military officials, as Newsmax reports.

Schaffer has accused Gen. Milley of inadequate response to the Jan. 6 incident and secretive communications that included discussions with members of Congress, like then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. These allegations have stirred significant controversy, prompting a closer look into Milley's decisions during the given period.

Schaffer also claims that Milley informed Chinese military leaders, promising them preemptive warnings of any U.S. actions, which Milley admitted while under oath. Such admissions have fueled debates on the appropriateness of Milley's conduct in his role as a senior military advisor.

According to Schaffer, this behavior could potentially be labeled as treasonous. He suggested that Milley should face severe repercussions, including a demotion from his four-star general rank to that of an O-4 major.

Schaffer Calls for Stringent Accountability for Milley

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has taken these allegations seriously and ordered an investigation into Milley's actions by the Pentagon's inspector general. This probe marks a pivotal moment in assessing high-level military conduct and adherence to protocols.

In addition to the investigation, Hegseth has taken immediate measures by revoking Milley’s secret service detail and suspending his security clearance. These steps indicate the seriousness of the accusations and the potential implications for national security.

During a 2020 communication, Gen. Milley reportedly assured Chinese officials that the U.S. had no intentions to launch attacks against Beijing.

This assurance was part of a broader effort to maintain stability and was coordinated with then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper and other administration officials.

Implications of Milley's Communications with China

Schaffer voiced his concerns on The Chris Salcedo Show on Newsmax, criticizing Milley's actions during the Jan. 6 unrest.

"First off, the failure to respond adequately to the 6th of January. [Milley] was part of the problem. He had secret communications with members of Congress to include Nancy Pelosi," Schaffer stated.

He further commented on Milley’s correspondence with Chinese military leadership,

"Secondly, his comments made to the Chinese military leadership in that same period. He's admitted under oath that he gave them a heads up and essentially promised he would give them some sort of early warning," Schaffer added.

"Well, I last time I checked that's treason. I'm not speaking in any official capacity [but] I'd like to see him administratively reduced from four-star general down to O-4 major. He should not be in any category of star after the investigation period," Schaffer concluded.

Broader Consequences for U.S. Military Leadership

The ongoing investigation and surrounding controversies raise extensive questions about the limits of military leadership roles, especially in politically sensitive contexts.

How Milley's case is resolved could set a significant precedent for military interactions in international relations and crisis management.

At this point, the outcomes of the investigation are eagerly awaited by various stakeholders, including military personnel, lawmakers, and the general public, each looking for transparency and accountability.

The resolution of this investigation will likely have a lasting impact on how senior military officers are perceived in the context of national security and international diplomacy.
