Most evangelicals back humane immigration reform, poll finds
Recent research reveals a complex perspective among Evangelical Christians in America towards immigration policies, showing substantial support for both border security and compassionate treatment of immigrants.
Evangelical support for balanced immigration reform is considerable, aligning lawfulness with compassion according to the latest Lifeway Research poll, the Christian Post reported.
Exploring Evangelical Opinions on Immigration
Lifeway Research, a prominent entity in studying religious trends, conducted a survey between January 13 and January 21, exploring the attitudes of U.S. Evangelicals towards immigration. The study was backed by organizations such as the Evangelical Immigration Table, the National Latino Evangelical Coalition, and World Relief, which receives funding from the U.S. State Department to support refugee resettlement efforts.
The results underscored a dual priority among Evangelicals: enhancing border security and ensuring humane treatment towards immigrants, including those residing in the country illegally. This survey comes on the heels of a major policy shift; following an executive order by former President Trump that suspended the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program after the admission of over 100,000 refugees in fiscal year 2024 during the Biden administration.
Strong immigration reform support is highlighted among evangelical responders, with a vast majority considering it crucial for Congress to introduce significant legislation in 2025. The desired legislation, according to the survey, should ensure fairness to taxpayers, uphold the rule of law, secure borders, and most importantly, respect the individual dignity and family unity of immigrants.
Evangelical Stance on Refugees and Illegal Immigration
The survey highlights a notable empathy among Evangelicals towards refugees, with approximately 70% agreeing that the U.S. holds a moral responsibility to accept refugees in line with U.S. legislation. Additionally, about 80% of respondents value sermons that apply biblical principles to current immigration debates, emphasizing a faith-based approach to policy.
There is significant support for creating pathways to citizenship, particularly for Dreamers, with 74% in favor of establishing a citizenship path for illegal immigrants. Scott McConnell, Executive Director of Lifeway Research, emphasized the importance of family and community connections stating, "Less than 1 in 6 Evangelicals value deporting undocumented immigrants whose immediate family has legal status or have been in the country for over five years; these are their neighbors and families they don't want to see divided."
When considering penalties for illegal immigrants, particularly in severe cases such as violent crimes or threats to national security, a majority of Evangelicals back deportation. Conversely, there's less support for deporting those based simply on duration of stay or familial connections within the U.S.
Push for Security and Compassion in Legislation
A large proportion of Evangelicals advocate for a balanced approach combining stricter border security and a pathway for citizenship. According to McConnell, "Evangelicals want a system that is both fair and alleviates potential threats to national security." His statement reflects the nuanced stance of this demographic, integrating a firm stand on border control with open consideration for individual cases.
The delicate issue of child-parent separation and a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal immigration showed almost equal splits in support and opposition among Evangelicals, illustrating the ongoing internal debate within the community.
With such a strong backing for comprehensive immigration legislation, the voices of Evangelicals could have a significant impact on future policies. World Relief’s CEO Myal Greene optimistically notes the potential influence of evangelical perspectives on President Trump, urging reevaluation of the refugee program and broader immigration strategies that honor family unity and provide orderly and secure border management.
Evangelical Advocacy Could Shape Future Policies
Greene’s hopeful insight reflects a broader Evangelical call for policies that "respect the dignity of all people as made in God's image." This statement underscores a key aspect of the Evangelical approach to immigration—balancing the enforcement of laws with the ethical treatment of individuals regardless of their status.
This survey faithfully illustrates that while security remains a priority, there is a deep-seated commitment among U.S. Evangelicals to ensure that immigration policies also reflect compassion and respect for human dignity. This perspective could very well influence the trajectory of U.S. immigration policy in the immediate future.
