New CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz's swearing-in interrupted by WH medical emergency

In a dramatic turn at the Oval Office, Dr. Mehmet Oz's swearing-in as CMS administrator was interrupted when his granddaughter unexpectedly collapsed.

A sudden medical emergency involving Dr. Oz's granddaughter, Philomena, halted his CMS inauguration ceremony, as the Daily Caller reports.

The ceremony, intended to celebrate Dr. Oz's new leadership role at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, began under the gaze of family, politicians, and the press. Dr. Oz, a renowned television personality before his administrative appointment, was to be sworn in before a planned Q&A session with President Donald Trump.

Granddaughter faints at ceremony

As Trump discussed nuclear weapons, the event took an unexpected turn. Philomena Oz, only 11 years old, fainted, causing immediate commotion inside the prestigious room.

"Philo fainted, Philo fainted. Dad, go!" cried an unnamed daughter of Dr. Oz, her voice cutting through the solemn proceedings. The urgency of the moment was palpable, drawing the room's full attention towards the young girl.

Reacting swiftly, Dr. Oz, joined by others, rushed to aid Philomena. Meanwhile, a directive from an unidentified woman echoed through the room, "Press, out. Out, press," followed by a White House aide's firm command, "Everybody out!" This led to a hurried evacuation of the press and all attendees except the family.

Swift emergency response noted

As attendees moved out, a woman was seen in social media videos from platform X, holding Philomena's face, trying to provide comfort as they waited for further assistance. The scene captured on video highlighted the swift and concerned reactions from those present.

Trump and other dignitaries discreetly exited the Oval Office, ensuring that the focus remained on attending to the young girl's needs.

This moment of personal crisis starkly contrasted with the intended celebratory tone of the ceremony.

The White House later issued a statement confirming the incident. It reassured the public, stating, "A minor family member fainted during Dr. Oz’s swearing-in ceremony in the Oval Office," and "We are happy to say she is okay." This brief note aimed to alleviate public concern over the startling event.

Dr. Oz's path to position

Dr. Oz's journey to becoming the administrator of CMS was marked by significant milestones. Appointed by Trump in November 2024, his confirmation came after a Senate vote of 53-45 on April 3, reflecting a mixture of support and contention within legislative ranks.

The position at CMS, a pivotal role within the Health and Human Services, will have Dr. Oz at the forefront of managing one of the nation's most crucial healthcare systems, impacting millions of Americans who rely on Medicare and Medicaid.

Dr. Oz was officially sworn in by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., in a ceremony that included his immediate family -- his wife Lisa, daughters Arabella, Zoe, and Daphne, his son Oliver, and his grandchildren.

Quick recovery, resilience noted

Despite the unexpected medical scare, the resilience of the family and the calm response by the event’s staff and medical personnel highlighted the strength and preparedness of those at the ceremony.

Philomena’s recovery was swift, allowing the momentary pause in the ceremony to resolve without further incident.

Such occurrences remind us of the unpredictable nature of even the most meticulously planned events, bringing to light the importance of rapid and effective emergency response protocols.

The incident, while unsettling, did not overshadow the significance of the day for Dr. Oz and his family.

With the ceremony concluded and Philomena’s health confirmed stable, the family likely looks forward to focusing on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in Dr. Oz's new governmental role.
