New release date for 'Can Only Imagine 2,' focuses on MercyMe's hit 'Even If'
The anticipated sequel to the hit 2018 film "I Can Only Imagine" is now set to reach audiences a month earlier than initially planned.
According to the Christian Post, the film "Can Only Imagine 2," exploring the journey of Bart Millard and MercyMe through their song "Even If," will premiere on February 20, 2026.
Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company, the teams behind the successful franchise, announced the new release date, shifting from March 20, 2026, to a month earlier. The decision underscores the enthusiasm and confidence the producers have in the sequel.
Directed by Andrew Erwin and Brent McCorkle, who also penned the screenplay, "Can Only Imagine 2" continues to thread the narrative of faith and redemption that was prominent in its predecessor. The production is currently underway in Nashville, Tennessee.
Film Builds on Emotional Foundations of Original
John Finley steps into the lead role of Bart Millard, portraying facets of the Christian band MercyMe's journey in the music industry. He is joined by a diverse cast, including Milo Ventimiglia, Arielle Kebbel, Joshua Bassett, Sophie Skelton, Sammy Dell, Trace Adkins, and Dennis Quaid, all contributing to the rich tapestry of the film's narrative.
The first film, released in 2018, was more than just a box office success; it was a story of personal upheaval and ultimate redemption, earning over $83 million domestically.
Building on this success, the sequel aims to delve deeper into MercyMe's musical odyssey post their inaugural hit, focusing particularly on their song "Even If," which was inspired by Millard's real-life experiences with his son's chronic illness.
True Stories Continue to Inspire Kingdom Story Company
Kevin Downes, one of the film’s producers, expressed great enthusiasm about the project. "The song that we focus on starts with 'Imagine,' so you're going to get all the feels of 'I Can Only Imagine' when it was released. And then the song, it ends up tracking as their second biggest hit, which was called 'Even If.' I love the script — there are so many entry points character-wise into it," Downes stated.
Reflecting on the challenges of portraying truthful yet profound stories, Bart Millard remarked, "It's kind of scary making a faith-based film. I didn't want it to be low-hanging fruit or kind of a corny movie, and I think they did a great job of capturing the emotion." He shared his connection to the song "Even If," borne out of his son’s long battle with diabetes.
Millard's transparency about his emotional journey adds a layer of authenticity and depth to the film, making it not just a cinematic experience but also a relatable human story.
Anticipation Builds for a Narrative of Hope and Perseverance
The relational and emotional dynamics portrayed in "Can Only Imagine 2" reflect the producers' dedication to themes of redemption and hope. Echoing this sentiment, Andy Erwin stated, "Redemption is at the core of everything we do; it has to be about the idea of redemption that promotes hope."
These themes resonate not just with those of faith but also with a broader audience, inviting them to explore layers of meaning and empathy.
Following the trajectory of Kingdom Story Company, their release after "I Can Only Imagine 2," titled “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” directed by Dallas Jenkins, also saw significant success, grossing over $58 million globally. This indicates a consistent recognition for films that strike a chord with themes of growth and overcoming adversity.
As fans of the original movie and followers of MercyMe’s music await the release of "Can Only Imagine 2," the film promises not just to narrate a story but to depict a journey of emotional resilience, interwoven with potent music that echoes beyond the theater.
