New York Jets QB Justin Fields says faith now guides his life and decisions

During a recent New York Jets training camp news conference, quarterback Justin Fields spoke candidly about how daily Bible reading has transformed both his personal and professional life.

According to The Christian Post, fields shared that over the past six months, his Christian faith has grown stronger, helping him turn away from public approval and focus solely on guidance from God.

The 25-year-old quarterback, who joined the Jets in March on a two-year, $40 million contract, said Bible reading has become a daily routine that has significantly deepened his spiritual convictions. Previously, Fields spent three seasons with the Chicago Bears and one with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His football journey began at Ohio State University, where he was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year twice.

Daily Scripture Reading Changes Perspective

During the press conference, Fields emphasized that regular Bible engagement has helped shape his mindset. Discovering overlooked biblical wisdom has enriched his life and outlook, he said. “Honestly, I'm low-key addicted to like getting my Bible every day,” Fields noted, emphasizing how he learns something new that applies to his daily life each time he reads it.

He explained that growing spiritually has motivated him to evaluate his priorities. Fields said he now seeks validation from his teammates, coaches, and most importantly, from God—rather than the broader public. “You can't let other people's opinions shape yours,” he said. “I'm glad the only approval I need now is from my team and ultimately God.”

Fields also reflected on how his faith journey evolved from childhood church experiences to his current commitment. “I was sleeping on the Bible earlier in my life. I wish I had started sooner,” he admitted. He encouraged others to take small steps by reading books like Proverbs to begin a similar journey.

Faith Expressed Through Actions and Lifestyle

The quarterback’s commitment to his beliefs is evident beyond his words. He starts each day with a Bible app, a practice he previously shared in a 2023 interview with GQ. In line with his spiritual values, Fields wears apparel that promotes humility, including his preference for clothing labeled "Humble Over Hype."

He also displays his beliefs permanently—in particular, through a chest tattoo of 1 John 1:9, a verse that holds special meaning as it was his father’s favorite. These choices reflect a deeper intention to align all aspects of his life with his evolving Christian values.

Fields is not alone among professional athletes speaking publicly about their faith. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield said in March that he found faith in Jesus after reaching a low point. Mayfield emphasized that character and community now mean more to him than statistical performance.

Athletes Across Sports Embrace Spiritual Growth

In May, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Kaleb Johnson discussed his baptism as a turning point, explaining it marked a surrender of ego and a new sense of identity. “It wasn’t about physical strength or winning a game—it was about declaring my faith,” Johnson said.

That same month, 26 athletes were baptized in a hotel pool following a campus worship event tied to the Conference USA Softball Championship. More than 70 players and coaches attended, underscoring broader interest in faith-based community within collegiate sports.

Former NFL player and commentator Benjamin Watson highlighted the unique challenges that come with public expressions of spirituality in sports. He said new believers can be rushed into the spotlight before they are ready, adding that meaningful support systems are essential for spiritual maturity.

Support and Accountability Among Believers

Watson stressed that constructive feedback from other believers should come from genuine relationships and a place of love. “We have to be in prayer that brothers would be willing to speak truth in love to athletes,” he said. “That comes through relationship.”

He also warned that celebrity status can sometimes push young Christians too quickly into influential roles. “It doesn’t matter if you just became a Christian yesterday or two days ago—many churches and groups want you to speak right away,” Watson explained.

Instead, Watson believes that accountability and encouragement over time foster the kind of spiritual maturity that lasts. “You help him along, you comment on what he's saying, and you address it faithfully—but in a way that encourages growth and doesn’t tear someone down,” he added.

Fields' Continued Commitment to Faith

For now, Fields says his focus is on continuing to grow in his faith and applying biblical lessons in daily life and football. He hopes his example encourages others to start their spiritual journeys.

“I learn something new every day,” Fields said. “And I’m able to apply it to my life in ways that are meaningful.”

As the Jets prepare for the upcoming season, Fields’ leadership both on and off the field may become a defining part of his new chapter in New York.
