New York Republican Lawmakers Await Final Vote Counts Before Conceding
Two pivotal New York congressional races hang in the balance as incumbent Republican representatives Marcus Molinaro and Anthony D'Esposito face tight contests against their Democratic challengers.
According to The Washington Times, both Republican representatives are refusing to concede their races, with thousands of uncounted ballots potentially determining the final outcome.
The closely watched contests represent critical battlegrounds in the fight for House control. In New York's 19th District, Molinaro trails Democrat Josh Riley by 3,500 votes, with more than 12,000 absentee and affidavit ballots still awaiting tabulation.
The Associated Press called the race for Riley at 1:20 a.m., showing him leading with 50.9% to Molinaro's 49.1%, with 95% of votes counted.
Tight Race Unfolds In 19th District
The rematch between Molinaro and Riley has proven even more competitive than their 2022 encounter. Their previous contest ended with Molinaro securing victory by fewer than 4,500 votes.
The district, spanning from Ithaca to the Catskill Mountains, was designated a "toss up" by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.
Both campaigns invested heavily in the race, making it New York's most expensive congressional battle this cycle.
Molinaro, addressing the uncertain outcome, stated his position clearly. As conveyed by the incumbent:
These ballots will decide the race and we have to be sure every legal vote is counted. Whatever the result ends up being, I will accept it and am beyond grateful to my family, friends and supporters.
The freshman Republican congressman found himself among several New York GOP representatives targeted by Democrats this cycle.
The Democratic push comes after Republicans flipped multiple seats in 2022 to secure their House majority.
Long Island Contest Remains Undecided
The 4th Congressional District race between Republican incumbent Anthony D'Esposito and Democrat Laura Gillen presents another nail-biter. Despite Gillen's victory declaration on Tuesday night with a 1.8% lead, D'Esposito has declined to concede. No major news organization has officially called this race.
D'Esposito, a former NYPD detective, mounted a strong campaign focused on border security and law enforcement issues.
His campaign raised over $4.4 million, though Gillen surpassed this with more than $6.1 million in fundraising. Their previous matchup in 2022 ended with D'Esposito prevailing by less than 10,000 votes.
The incumbent's campaign faced controversy following a New York Times report about potential House ethics rules violations regarding office hiring practices. When questioned about these allegations, D'Esposito maintained that there was "nothing done that was not ethical."
Campaign Issues Shape Electoral Landscape
The races highlighted stark policy contrasts between candidates. D'Esposito aligned himself with former President Donald Trump's agenda, particularly on economic and border security matters. At a September rally at Nassau Coliseum, D'Esposito expressed strong support for Trump's policies.
Both contests reflected broader national political themes. Gillen's campaign emphasized abortion rights, criticizing the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. Meanwhile, Republican candidates focused on economic issues and border security concerns.
Final Outcome Awaits Vote Count
The unresolved races exemplify the razor-thin margins defining modern congressional elections. With thousands of ballots still uncounted in the 19th District and a narrow margin in the 4th, both contests remain technically undecided despite initial projections and victory claims.
These competitive races demonstrate the continuing battleground status of New York congressional districts. The outcomes could prove crucial in determining the balance of power in the House of Representatives, making the final vote tallies particularly significant for both parties' political futures.
