NY Attorney General Letitia James faces claim of terminating lawyer over gender care stance

In a striking turn of events, a consumer fraud lawyer, Glenna Goldis, has accused New York State Attorney General Letitia James of firing her for voicing concerns about pediatric gender medicine and its potential as consumer fraud.

Goldis claims she was abruptly terminated on Thursday after raising issues about gender-affirming care for children. She alleges her concerns, expressed both internally and publicly on her Substack since 2024, were met with hostility and warnings about violating internal policies. The New York State Attorney General's office confirmed her dismissal, stating that her actions disregarded rules and disrupted efforts to safeguard New Yorkers’ rights.

The issue has sparked intense debate over free speech, workplace policies, and the contentious topic of gender-affirming care for minors. While Goldis frames her termination as a suppression of dissent, the Attorney General’s office insists it was a matter of maintaining operational integrity. This clash highlights broader tensions in public policy discussions around medical treatments for young people.

Concerns Over Pediatric Gender Medicine Raised

Goldis, identifying as a lesbian and part of the LGBTQ community, began questioning pediatric gender medicine (PGM) as early as 2024, labeling it as potentially fraudulent. She argues that her role as a consumer fraud lawyer obligated her to flag these concerns, both within the office and in public forums.

Her public comments, including a post referencing the Supreme Court case US v. Skrmetti, according to The New York Post, contradicted James’ legal position on the matter. This led to warnings from superiors about breaching internal communication policies. Goldis claims these restrictions on her external statements are not just unfair but unconstitutional.

Speaking to The Post on Friday, Goldis shares “James was wrong to treat me like a pest. I was trying to warn her about red flags for fraud that I saw around PGM [pediatric gender medicine] — that’s what she hired me to do,” she said on X. It’s hard to ignore the irony of a fraud expert being dismissed for pointing out what she sees as a glaring issue.

Free Speech or Workplace Disruption?

The Attorney General’s office emphasizes that rules exist for a reason. Their spokesperson stated, “This former employee’s flagrant and repeated disregard of these rules and protocols disrupted and undermined our efforts to protect the rights of all New Yorkers.” This response suggests Goldis crossed a line, but one wonders if that line was drawn to stifle dissent rather than maintain order.

Goldis counters that her firing reflects a broader problem of ideological conformity in progressive circles, especially in places like New York City. She argues that leaders often frame gender-affirming care as a moral absolute, leaving little room for skepticism. This, she claims, creates a chilling effect on honest debate.

With a 15-year career in public interest law, Goldis notes that even her progressive peers privately harbor doubts about PGM. Yet, public discourse remains lopsided, and she sees her termination as a prime example of why. If experienced lawyers can’t question policy without risking their jobs, what hope is there for open dialogue?

Legal Battles and Broader Implications

Adding fuel to the fire, Goldis is now consulting First Amendment experts to explore whether her rights were violated by the Attorney General’s actions. She believes the restrictions placed on her speech outside the workplace overstep legal boundaries. This potential legal challenge could set a precedent for how much employees can say on controversial issues.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s office is already entangled in federal lawsuits against the Trump administration over policies targeting gender transition procedures for minors. This backdrop makes Goldis’ firing even more charged, as it ties into a national debate over medical ethics and parental rights. The stakes couldn’t be higher for both sides.

Goldis also questions whether James fully grasps the implications of treatments like puberty blockers, urging her to address specific concerns about potential malpractice. Her critique is a call for accountability in an area where mistakes can have lifelong consequences. This isn’t mere workplace drama; it’s a policy flashpoint.

A Debate That Won’t Fade Quietly

At its core, this story is about who gets to define the boundaries of acceptable speech in public service. Goldis’ case raises uncomfortable questions about whether dissenting views, even on deeply divisive issues, can be aired without professional repercussions. Her fight might resonate with many who feel muzzled by prevailing narratives.

The clash between individual conscience and institutional loyalty is on full display here, and it’s not hard to see why Goldis feels wronged. If her role was to protect consumers from fraud, shouldn’t her warnings about PGM at least warrant a discussion, not a pink slip? Silencing skepticism doesn’t protect rights; it undermines trust.

As this saga unfolds, one thing is clear: the tension between personal beliefs and workplace rules won’t be resolved easily. Goldis’s next steps, potentially in court, could ripple through debates over free expression and medical policy. For now, her story serves as a stark reminder that questioning the status quo often comes at a steep price.
