Oklahoma pastor held over alleged abuse and housing families

In Bethany, Oklahoma, a local pastor has been arrested under disturbing circumstances. Elmer Baca Flores, 40, is accused of sexually abusing a minor and manipulating church members.

According to the Oklahoman, Elmer Baca Flores allegedly used his position to commit sexual abuse and coerce families into living at his residence.

Police received initial reports of potential human and labor trafficking at Flores' church, Ministerio Levantando Adoradores Para Cristo, in early January. This led to an investigation concerning several families who had mysteriously moved to Flores' home.

Investigation Triggered by Concerned Parents

The inquiry began when two fathers reported that their wives and children had gone to Flores' house and hadn't returned. Both men were growing increasingly worried about the safety and well-being of their families.

As the police delved deeper, they discovered multiple families and single women residing in Flores' Bethany home. Children were found sequestered in a specific room, separate from adults.

Flores was consequently arrested and put into Oklahoma County jail on a $250,000 bond. He had not secured release by the following Tuesday, indicating serious concern over the allegations against him.

Alleged Abuse Hidden Behind Spiritual Pretexts

At the core of the investigation was a 16-year-old girl, long associated with the church and now stepping forward with accusations against Flores. She revealed that the abuse began when she was just 15 years old.

The girl detailed disturbing sexual advances by Flores, including inappropriate massages and pressured sexual acts. Flores allegedly justified these actions as religious "tests" to prove loyalty.

In one instance recounted by the victim, Flores escalated his behavior by attempting more explicit acts in his bedroom in March 2024 and again in his trailer the following month, further violating the girl's trust and rights.

Manipulation Extends Beyond Physical Abuse

Flores was reported to have misused his religious authority to an alarming degree. He told the girl during a service at Harlow Park that their actions were divinely sanctioned, twisting religious context to manipulate the victim further.

Moreover, he threatened her with grave spiritual consequences if she disclosed the abuse, stating that her parents would be expelled from the community and "their souls condemned to hell because of her 'betrayal'," according to court affidavits.

Pushing his control over the congregation further, Flores convinced members to quit their jobs and move into his trailer, claiming it was part of their spiritual journey.

Community Shocked by Pastor’s Betrayal

The community, which had placed trust and spiritual leadership in the hands of Flores, was left reeling as these allegations surfaced. The accusatory narrative was compounded with the discovery that Flores and some of his associates, described as bodyguards, were ex-gang members. This past raised additional concerns about his influence and intentions.

The girl, now realizing the deception, confided in her parents, describing Flores as a "liar and not following the Bible." This courageous act was a pivotal moment in bringing the ongoing abuse to light.

Online records last checked did not list an attorney for Flores, who faces charges of indecent proposals and lewd acts based on the detailed and grave allegations against him.

Legal and Social Repercussions Await

The case against Flores is building, with evidence mounting not only from the victims' testimonials but also from the broader implications of his control over his congregation. The legal process is expected to unfold over the coming months, reflecting the seriousness of the charges.

As the community and victims seek justice, the case highlights the devastating impact of abuse of power, especially within trusted institutions. It centers on the need for vigilance and support for victims' voices in confronting such betrayals.

As the Bethany community grapples with these revelations, support services and counseling are being offered to the affected families and individuals, prioritizing healing and justice in the wake of this scandal.
