Pastor fatally shot outside Memphis bar, dispute over moral authority cited

In a tragic incident that has shaken the community of Memphis, Tennessee, Senior Pastor Ricky Floyd was killed following a late-night confrontation outside a local bar. The dispute, stemming from a discussion about religious beliefs and moral standings, escalated to violence in the early hours of March 12, 2025.

According to the Christian Post, the incident led to the death of Pastor Floyd, who was involved in a heated debate about his conduct and role as a church leader before being shot by Samantha Marion.

The altercation began inside the bar when Floyd, Marion, and Steven Newsom discussed biblical interpretations and questioned Floyd’s presence there, challenging his suitability to preach. Their conversation grew heated as they debated whether a pastor like Floyd should be in such an establishment at such a late hour.

As the discussion moved outside, tensions escalated further. Floyd reportedly knocked Newsom to the ground and threw Marion’s phone, damaging it and intensifying the conflict. Eyewitnesses and video footage indicate that Floyd became increasingly aggressive during these moments.

Police presented video evidence capturing these intense moments, showing Floyd throwing a phone and a beer can before attempting to leave in his vehicle. However, he returned to confront Marion once more, immediately before the shooting occurred.

Violence Erupts Outside Local Bar, Resulting in Pastor's Death

Video recordings from the scene show Floyd approaching Marion aggressively, suggesting an intent that was far from peaceful. This footage played a crucial role in detailing the final moments before Floyd’s death.

At approximately 1:17 a.m., Marion called the police and admitted to shooting Floyd. Authorities pronounced Floyd dead at the scene and later charged Marion, 42, with voluntary manslaughter as a result of the altercation.

John Keith Perry described the initial interaction, stating, “Reverend Floyd had some, I call them tracts, but the small magazine publications that are religious, and passes them to the people that are at the bar.” Floyd’s action appeared to spark the ensuing debate over his moral authority.

Community and Police React to the Shocking Incident

Further clarifying the nature of the argument, Perry stated that Marion was pressing Floyd on his reasons for being at the bar and questioning his authority to counsel others. "We are also told that Samantha Marion was getting the best of him in that argument," Perry added, highlighting the intense nature of their exchange.

Kevin Massey, a witness, noted Floyd's aggression, saying, "Whatever triggered him, he was upset with Mrs. Marion. He fought through two individuals to get to her... But he had aggression in his heart and his mind.”

Despite the heated altercation, Perry emphasized that there were no explicit threats made. "What was said exactly is not remembered by everybody, but there was no kind of a threat. Or 'I'll see you in the parking lot' or anything like that," he explained, suggesting the violence was not premeditated but rather a tragic escalation of an argument.

Memphis Community Mourns the Loss of a Prominent Pastor

The loss of Pastor Ricky Floyd is deeply felt within the Memphis community, where he was not only a spiritual leader but also an active participant in various community initiatives. He served as president of Eden Estates Apartments, founded a mentoring program, and established the School of Marriage Enhancement to support couples.

Memphis Police Department Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis expressed her condolences: "It is with great sadness that I address the tragic loss of Pastor Ricky Floyd from the Pursuit of God Church in Frayser. Pastor Floyd was a respected leader in our community, both in Memphis and beyond."

The funeral for Pastor Floyd is scheduled for March 28, 2025, at Greater Imani Church, where the community will gather to remember his contributions and grapple with the complexities surrounding his untimely death.
