Relative reveals new details in Gene Hackman death probe

The sudden death of legendary actor Gene Hackman, alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa and their dog in their New Mexico home, has left many unanswered questions.

The ongoing investigation into the deaths has ruled out gas leaks and carbon monoxide, focusing on other potential causes, as USA Today reports.

On Feb. 26, Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were found deceased under mysterious circumstances.

Their bodies, along with their deceased dog, were discovered in different areas of their residence, signaling an unexpected tragedy that has since captivated public attention.

Hackman was located next to his cane in the mudroom of the home, while Arakawa was found near a space heater in an open bathroom. Nearby, officers noted an open bottle of prescription pills scattered on the floor, adding complexity to the scene.

Authorities Exclude Carbon Monoxide as Potential Cause

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office arrived promptly and undertook a thorough survey of the premises.

Their investigation involved rigorous testing of the house’s atmosphere, which conclusively ruled out gas leaks or carbon monoxide as contributing factors to the deaths.

Complementing the sheriff’s efforts, the New Mexico Gas Company also conducted its detailed examinations on the same day.

The resulting findings confirmed minor issues that were unrelated to the actual cause of death, thereby deepening the mystery around the fatalities.

Amid this backdrop, Arakawa's body presented signs of advanced decomposition, such as facial bloating and the mummification of her hands and feet, suggesting a timeline that could assist in pinpointing the exact time of death.

Family Awaits Key Toxicology Results

In the wake of such a traumatic event, Tim Hackman, Gene Hackman’s nephew, has been a primary source of communication from the family.

He emphasized the importance of awaiting the toxicology results before forming conclusions. "We're waiting on toxicology. That will tell us everything," he stated, reflecting a cautious approach during this sensitive time.

Further complicating the investigation, a crucial piece of medical data was retrieved from Hackman's pacemaker, which indicated that his last recorded event was on February 17, 2025, nearly a week before the bodies were discovered. This information could be vital in understanding the sequence of events leading up to the deaths.

During this period, the memory of Gene Hackman was honored at the Academy Awards on March 2, signifying his lasting impact on the film industry.

Close Ties Between Hackman and Arakawa Remembered

As investigations continue, those who knew Hackman and Arakawa offered insights into their personal lives. Andy Wells, a flight instructor, recollected the couple's inseparable nature. "The two of them were joined at the hip practically," he shared, highlighting their deep bond.

Wells also mentioned Arakawa's character, describing her as "small and quiet and very, very focused," which complemented Hackman's more reserved persona in later years. Her personality traits, as shared by those close to them, offered a glimpse into the couple's private lives, overshadowed now by their tragic demise.

This tragic event continues to unfold as the community, fans, and family members seek clarity and closure from the investigation outcomes.

The final toxicology results are expected to provide necessary answers and possibly shed light on the causes behind such unexpected deaths, sealing the fate of this beloved couple, celebrated not just for their public achievements but also for their private devotion to each other.
