Right-wing priest stripped of license after controversial gesture

In a controversial decision that has sparked discussions across the globe, the Anglo-Catholic Church stripped Father Calvin Robinson of his priestly license due to his outspoken far-right views.

According to the Independent, The revocation followed a contentious incident at a National Pro-Life Summit in Washington D.C., where Robinson mimicked a gesture by Elon Musk.

Robinson, aged 39, made the gesture while addressing attendees at the summit last weekend. His actions immediately drew criticism for their perceived offensiveness, drawing parallels to a gesture previously exhibited by Elon Musk at a notable public event.

Elon Musk's original gesture occurred during a rally following Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, 2025, which Musk later dismissed as misinterpreted despite its controversial nature. Robinson, echoing this gesture at the pro-life event, faced immediate backlash from both public and ecclesiastical communities.

Following his appearance at the summit, Robinson took to Twitter to express his dismay at the response, describing the influx of negative feedback as from "very bitter, angry, vile leftists." His digital outburst included several defenses of his actions.

Church's Reaction to Controversial Speech

In response to the uproar and Robinson's online behavior, the Anglo-Catholic Church released a public statement. The Church emphasized that this was not the first time it had warned Robinson about his conduct. Church authorities had long been concerned about his consistent controversial actions and statements online.

The church's official statement declared, "Clearly, he has not [heeded warnings], and as such, we have revoked his license in this Church. He is no longer serving as a priest in the ACC." This drastic measure reinforces the church's commitment to maintaining decorum and respect within its ranks.

Defending his gesture on Twitter, Robinson insisted that he intended it as an example of British dry wit rather than a serious endorsement of any hateful ideologies. He tweeted, “My attempt at dry wit, in that typical British way, was not a joke at the expense of WWII, nor an admission of my membership in the Nationalist Socialist Party.”

Wider Implications and Public Reaction

This incident sheds light on Robinson's previous controversies, including his outspoken opposition to movements like Black Lives Matter and his views on same-sex marriage. These positions have long been sources of contention between Robinson and broader societal values.

Robinson's association with the far-right movement and UKIP in the UK further complicates his public persona. His friendship with Tommy Robinson, a like-minded far-right figure currently incarcerated, is also notable. Notably, Elon Musk has publicly expressed support for Tommy Robinson, intertwining political and personal endorsements that mirror those of Father Robinson.

Adding to the complexity of his character is Robinson's unique ethnic background; he is half Afro-Caribbean and half English. His various statements and actions paint a picture of a man at the center of several social and political storms.

Personal Reflections and Future Directions

Despite the considerable backlash, Robinson remains steadfast in his views. In his more reflective tweets, he highlighted his belief in the sanctity of all human lives, urging followers to focus on 'the light' and not be distracted by his detractors.

His statement on Twitter following the event conveyed his philosophical stance: “Whether a silly old cleric like me makes a poor joke is irrelevant. Do not be swayed and distracted by the enemy whispering in your ears. Focus on the light. All human life is sacred. Imago Dei.”

The future of Robinson's career and his role within or outside of traditional religious and political frameworks remain uncertain. His dismissal from the clergy marks a significant turn in his public life, positioning him possibly even more firmly on the path of political activism.

As this story develops, the broader societal implications of such public figures and their actions continue to stir debate and discussion about the intersections of religion, politics, and personal expression.
