Riley Gaines welcomes baby girl

Riley Gaines, known nationally for her advocacy in women’s athletics, announced the birth of her first child, a daughter named Margot, on Thursday night, Oct. 2, 2025.

The former NCAA swimmer shared the news in a social media post alongside her husband, celebrating the arrival of their newborn with gratitude and emotion, as The Daily Caller reports.

Gaines posted a photo of herself, her newborn daughter, and husband Louis Barker on Oct. 3, smiling as they introduced Margot to the world. In the caption, she expressed her overwhelming love, writing, “There’s nothing that could’ve prepared me for a love like this... Welcome to the world, sweet Margot.” Gaines also thanked God for what she described as a profound blessing.

This marks a new chapter for Gaines, who first shared news of her pregnancy in June 2025 during a live appearance at a Turning Point USA event in Texas. The announcement was met with congratulatory messages from supporters and fans of her work in women’s sports and media.

Despite her pregnancy, Gaines remained highly active, attracting headlines in July 2025 when she swam 1.25 miles in open water near San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island. At the time, she was 31 weeks pregnant.

That athletic feat took place alongside U.S. Navy SEALs, combat veterans, and her husband, all of whom joined Gaines in the challenging swim. The event served as a testament to her physical endurance and mental strength while demonstrating her ongoing commitment to fitness during pregnancy.

Gaines has gained prominence beyond athletics through her outspoken defense of sex-based competition in women’s sports. Her advocacy began in earnest following the 2022 NCAA championships, where she competed against transgender athlete Lia Thomas.

In the years since, Gaines has positioned herself as a central figure in the debate over transgender participation in women’s athletics. She has contended that allowing biological males to compete in female categories puts women at a competitive disadvantage.

Public clashes highlight rising platform

Her national platform reached new heights as she frequently addressed crowds, appeared in media interviews, and hosted her own show, “Gaines for Girls,” on sports media outlet OutKick. The show serves as a forum focused on celebrating and defending women’s sports and stories.

Gaines was involved in a high-profile disagreement with Olympic champion Simone Biles earlier in 2025. Biles criticized Gaines for what she perceived as hostility toward transgender athletes and labeled her actions as divisive.

Gaines responded by stating that her stance was grounded in fairness, not exclusion. She dismissed Biles’ claims by explaining that preserving single-sex sports divisions protects the integrity of women’s athletic competition.

Federal changes shift policy landscape

The topic has also become a significant federal issue. In February 2025, the Trump administration, following his return to the presidency, issued a directive through the Department of Education that required the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations to revoke titles and records held by transgender athletes like Lia Thomas.

This directive came in the wake of an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that banned biological males from competing in women’s sports across high school and collegiate levels in the United States. The announcement ignited national debate and raised questions about regulatory authority over sports governing bodies.

As a result of these policies, the NCAA revised its rules to comply with federal guidelines. This change significantly altered the competitive landscape of women's athletics by limiting eligibility for transgender women in female sports divisions.

Family milestone comes amid public spotlight

Amid these political and cultural developments, Gaines’s personal life has drawn admiration from her supporters. Her public pregnancy and recent delivery have been met with celebratory reactions across social platforms and conservative media outlets.

Now a mother, Gaines seems poised to balance her personal milestones with her role as a prominent figure in athletics and policy discussions. Whether her advocacy will take a new direction post-motherhood remains to be seen, but her message of resilience and faith continues to resonate with many.

As she welcomes baby Margot into the world, Gaines enters a phase that many parents describe as one of life’s most transformative. For someone who has faced both applause and controversy, this new arrival may bring perspective and purpose beyond the world of sports.
