Second Protestant Clergy Member Killed In Colombia This Month

In northern Colombia, assailants assassinated Protestant church leader Iván García after he led a Wednesday night service, intensifying concerns about violence against religious figures in the region.
Last Wednesday's tragedy of Iván García being shot fatally marks a continuation of targeted killings against Protestant leaders in northern Colombia, the Christian Post reported.

The Fatal Assault on Church Leader Iván García

García, known for his pastoral works, walked home along a dark, rural road after a religious service when assailants abruptly ended his life. They shot García six times, with two bullets striking his head. Tragically, the attack also injured a female member of García’s group, who sustained a gunshot wound to her arm.

Two individuals on a motorcycle murdered García in the presence of his companions, including his 14-year-old stepdaughter.

Background and Church Progression Under García

Before García transformed back to Christianity, he participated in an illegal armed group. After renewing his faith, he became a significant figure in his community, growing his congregation from seven to over 30 members. He actively pursued a peaceful life, guided by Christian principles.

Despite his troubled past, García did not report any known threats before this incident. He and his wife, Pastor Karen Nierles, spent their half-year marriage fostering tranquility and growth through their community services.

Wife Remembers García’s Dedication

García's wife, Pastor Karen Nierles, reflected on her husband's commitment to his faith and community. "A few days ago, he told me that he was not afraid to teach the Bible, that he had a new life," she recounted. Her late husband had expressed, "For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."

Repeated Tragedies Amongst Religious Leaders

Assailants assassinated Iván García shortly after another horrifying incident in which attackers killed Pastor Marlon Lora and his family on December 29, 2024, in Aguachica, Cesar Department. These sequential attacks have alarmed religious communities across Colombia, intensifying fears for the safety of their leaders.

Last Saturday, mourners from the local and religious communities attended García's funeral to grieve the loss of a reformative figure in Zulia Department.

Changes in Government Policy Affecting Religious Leaders

In 2023, the government amended Decree 1066, controversially removing religious leaders from the list of individuals eligible for protective measures. This change has drawn scrutiny after recent attacks, highlighting the vulnerability of religious figures in volatile areas.

Additionally, the government has faced rising reports and concerns about threats to religious freedom and the security of religious leaders in Colombia.

Advocacy Group Calls for Action

Anna Lee Stangl, director of Advocacy at Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), commented on these assaults, highlighting their premeditated nature and calling for more to be done to protect religious leaders. "CSW grieves with the family and church community of Iván García," Stangl stated, emphasizing that the attack, like the earlier massacre, indicates a pattern of targeted, premeditated assassinations.

Stangl also pointed out, "Religious leaders have long been a target of illegal armed and criminal groups for many reasons, including the role many of them take up as peacemakers and their willingness to use their influence in their communities to encourage others to reject participation in violent and criminal activities."
