Senator pushes to relocate 2028 Olympics from riot-torn Los Angeles

Los Angeles’s dream of hosting the 2028 Olympics is under fire as Republican Senator Bernie Moreno demands the games be moved due to violent anti-ICE riots. The city, already slated for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, faces scrutiny over its ability to maintain order. Actions, it seems, have consequences.

As reported by Breitbart News, protests erupted in Los Angeles over the weekend in response to federal immigration enforcement actions. Demonstrators blocked roads, hurled eggs, and lobbed objects at police vehicles, with one car dramatically set ablaze at an intersection. The chaos prompted swift federal and state responses.

Senator Moreno argues that Los Angeles’s unrest proves it cannot safely host global events like the Olympics or the World Cup. He raised these concerns in a Senate hearing, questioning the city’s commitment to law and order. His proposal to relocate the games has sparked fierce debate.

Escalating Tensions and Federal Response

President Donald Trump ordered 4,000 National Guard troops and hundreds of U.S. Marines to Los Angeles to support ICE operations. This heavy-handed deployment aimed to restore peace amid the riots. Critics, however, see it as political theater.

California Governor Gavin Newsom claimed the federal government sent 2,000 soldiers, accusing them of seeking a “spectacle.” “Never use violence. Speak out peacefully,” Newsom urged, sidestepping the root causes of the unrest.

Democrats decried the troop deployment as an unnecessary escalation. Their condemnation ignores the burned cars and arrested protesters clogging Los Angeles streets. Progressive posturing won’t douse the flames of public frustration.

Arrests and Public Safety Concerns

On Friday, law enforcement arrested over 40 individuals during raids and warrant executions tied to the protests. The arrests highlight the intensity of the anti-ICE fervor gripping the city. Los Angeles’s leadership now faces a reckoning.

Moreno’s call to strip the city of the Olympics hinges on these security failures. “Won’t we be better off as a nation, just to make an acknowledgement of that and move it to someplace that actually will have law and order?” he asked. His logic is hard to dismiss when intersections are battlegrounds.

LA2028 CEO Reynold H. Hoover remains defiant, insisting the Olympics will showcase America’s best. His optimism feels tone-deaf as National Guard troops patrol the streets. A shiny global stage won’t mask a city in disarray.

Political Divide Over Global Events

Oklahoma Senator James Lankford defended hosting the Olympics in the U.S., emphasizing security and freedom. “We want to make this the most secure, and demonstrate the freedom that happens here,” he said Tuesday. Freedom, though, requires order, which Los Angeles struggles to provide.

Lankford noted Trump’s push to bring the Olympics to America, a goal now jeopardized by Los Angeles’s turmoil. The riots undermine the nation’s image before the world arrives. Relocating the games might salvage that vision.

Newsom’s plea for peace rings hollow against the backdrop of blocked roads and flaming vehicles. “Don’t give them one,” he said of the federal spectacle, yet his state’s policies fuel the unrest. Leadership, not lectures, is needed.

A City at a Crossroads

The anti-ICE riots expose deep divisions over immigration enforcement in Los Angeles. Protesters’ actions—throwing objects and torching cars—signal a rejection of federal authority. Such defiance complicates hosting international events.

Moreno’s proposal, while bold, forces a necessary conversation about public safety and global perception. Moving the Olympics could protect visitors and citizens alike from a city teetering on chaos. It’s a pragmatic, not punitive, suggestion.

Los Angeles must prove it can restore order before welcoming the world in 2026 and 2028. Failure risks not just the Olympics but America’s standing on the global stage. The clock is ticking, and the world is watching.
