She met Jesus after a fatal fall despite growing up an atheist
Heidi Barr grew up in a strictly atheist household that rejected all belief in God—until a moment of trauma at age 16 changed her life forever.
According to CBN, After a horseback riding accident left her clinically dead, Barr says she encountered Jesus, experienced Heaven, and returned to life with a transformed faith now detailed in her new book.
Raised in an atheist Jewish family in Iowa, Barr was immersed in religious tradition but not in belief. Her family belonged to an Orthodox synagogue, but her father was a staunch atheist who dismissed all belief as myth.
According to Barr, her father regularly told her there was no God, no Heaven, no Hell, and that life was just a result of science. Though she was forbidden to discuss any spiritual beliefs at home unless she was denying them, she says she privately prayed as a child to the “God of Abraham.”
That connection ended abruptly at age 12 after a traumatic experience with a rabbi, which led Barr into a difficult period filled with substance use and risky decisions. By age 15, she was searching for solace during long rides on her horse, Heather.
A Sudden Accident Turns Deadly
On one seemingly normal day, Barr took Heather out bareback into the hills. The ride quickly turned tragic when another horse ran past them, frightening Heather, who then reared twice before falling backward onto Barr.
In the accident, Barr suffered a fractured pelvis and a broken back. She says the fall crushed her chest, and in that moment, she believes she died and her spirit left her body.
From above, she says she saw her lifeless body on the ground and witnessed her little sister scream and shield her eyes. She recognized other people reacting, including the horse’s owner, and watched the scene unfold from nearly 40 feet up.
An Encounter That Changed Everything
It was during this out-of-body moment that Barr says she noticed someone with her. When she turned, she reports seeing a man she immediately knew to be Jesus—despite having no Christian background or knowledge of Him.
Barr says she instinctively knew everything about Him and was overwhelmed by His presence. “He is everything good in the universe,” she recalled, describing Him as joyful, loving, and full of life.
She then experienced what she calls a “life review,” where she re-lived not only her actions but also their emotional impact on others and, surprisingly, on Jesus Himself. She said she saw Him present throughout her life: from the womb, through infancy and childhood, and beyond.
Seeing Heaven in Vivid Detail
Following the life review, Barr says Jesus brought her into an infinite field of white light. She described it as a living presence of love, which she recognized as God Himself. She remembers feeling safe, loved, and held like a small child.
Her vision of Heaven was marked by vivid sensory detail. The grass was luminous and precise; flowers and trees pulsed with life; and everything, from the petals to the leaves, moved as if alive with song and light.
Barr remarked that even the most beautiful moments on Earth pale in comparison to what she witnessed there. She said the grass sang praises to God, moved not by wind but by divine energy that seemed to animate all creation.
A Mission to Share a Message of Love
Eventually, she says she was told by Jesus that her life was “in good hands,” and she returned to the physical world carrying with her a newfound sense of purpose. From that point forward, Barr’s life took a new course.
Today, she is a mother, a grandmother, and a retired nurse. Drawing from her experience, she wrote a memoir titled What I Saw in Heaven: The Incredible True Story of the Day I Died, Met Jesus, and Returned to Life a New Person.
In the book and in public talks, she shares her journey as a testimony of divine love and transformation. Her message centers on recognizing the presence of God in every moment and the importance of how our words and actions impact others.
