Steven Lawson addresses affair and ministry departure

Former pastor Steven Lawson has spoken publicly for the first time about his affair and subsequent removal from his ministry roles.

Lawson recently admitted to an extramarital affair, marking his first public comments since his removal from leadership positions six months ago, the Christian Post reported.

The scandal began when Lawson, the former lead preacher at Trinity Bible Church and president of OnePassion Ministries, disclosed his inappropriate relationship with a woman who was not his spouse. This confession led to his departure from these prominent roles in the religious community.

Lawson's Initial Public Announcement Via Social Media

Lawson took to the social media platform X last Wednesday to share his contrition and details of the steps he has taken since the revelation. His post highlighted his remorse and his commitment to recovery, marking a pivotal moment in addressing his followers.

The revelation of his wrongdoings had previously pushed Lawson into a period of silence. He described needing this time to reflect deeply on the sincerity of his repentance.

The Path of Counselling and Accountability

Following his admission, Lawson has engaged in intensive personal work, including counseling and regular accountability meetings. These are held weekly with a team that includes church elders and two pastors, aimed at preventing future missteps.

An additional accountability team oversees Lawson's broader recovery plan. His main recovery activities involve frequent engagement with religious practices like Bible reading and attending church.

Lawson's statements reflect a sense of profound regret and an acknowledgment of the harm his actions have caused his family and community. "I have sinned grievously against the Lord, against my wife, my family, and countless numbers of you," he explained, showing his awareness of the broader implications of his actions.

Understanding the Nature and Impact of the Affair

Phil Johnson, a church authority familiar with the situation, clarified that while the relationship endured for five years and had strong romantic elements, it stopped short of physical infidelity. Nevertheless, it was regarded as adulterous in spirit.

This affair has left irreparable damages, with Lawson himself stating the long-term personal and professional consequences he now faces.

Amidst the fallout, Lawson has resolved to focus on his family and not to make further public comments shortly. He expressed hope for redemption and restoration, pleading for forgiveness from his followers and asking for prayers for his marriage's healing.

Relocation and Continued Recovery Efforts

To facilitate his recovery, Lawson has temporarily relocated to Tennessee where he lives with his brother. This move is seen as part of his commitment to mend his personal life and relationships.

He remains dedicated to his weekly spiritual practices, which are crucial for his continued path towards personal redemption according to his recent statements.

As the former leader refrains from further public declarations, the community and his family are now focusing on healing and finding a way forward from this upheaval. Lawson's case serves as a sobering reminder of the personal struggles that can exist behind public figures and leaders, and the complex path towards forgiveness and recovery.
