Steven Lawson Steps Down, Relocates After Scandal, Looking For Secular Work

Following a serious personal scandal, former Pastor Steven Lawson has left his ministerial role and moved cities.

According to the Christian Post, Steven Lawson resigned from his pastoral position at Dallas' Trinity Bible Church after an adulterous relationship came to light and has since relocated to Nashville, contemplating non-ministerial work.

Steven Lawson’s tenure at Trinity Bible Church in Dallas ended after revelations surfaced about his involvement in an adulterous affair with a younger woman, who had previously been a friend but was not a member of his congregation. Lawson had known this woman, who was in her mid-twenties during their relationship, for about five years before the affair began.

Pastor Clint Archer from Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama, first detailed this revelation in a blog post on The Cripplegate. Archer discussed the situation, offering insights into Lawson's state and his future considerations following his moral fall. Lawson himself admitted to the affair in September, confessing to both the elders of his church and his family.

The Scandal's Impact And Lawson's Candid Confession

In his blog, Archer highlighted how Lawson expressed deep remorse during their conversations, often becoming very emotional. Lawson acknowledged his profound mistakes and the hurt caused to his family and community.

Phil Johnson, another pastoral figure involved in discussing the situation, pointed out that the relationship, while deeply inappropriate, did not involve literal fornication and was not an abuse of pastoral power, defending that the relationship arose out of a family connection, not from her student status or church membership.

As a direct consequence of the scandal, Steven Lawson decided it was best to leave Dallas and temporarily move to Nashville. This was seen as a beneficial step for both his recovery and in consideration of all parties affected by the affair.

Lawson Seeks New Beginnings In Nashville

In Nashville, Lawson stays with his brother and actively participates in a local church. This new environment also allows him to maintain daily interactions with friends and counselors dedicated to guiding him through this turbulent phase.

He has been in touch with professionals who specialize in counseling pastors who have fallen from grace, reflecting on his actions and their repercussions. Despite these efforts, Lawson understood that his future would not include returning to ministerial duties.

Lawson has made significant efforts to rectify his mistakes where possible. He has returned advance payments for book contracts, acknowledging that he will no longer proceed with publishing them due to his current state.

Consolidating the Steps Towards Redemption

A potential outlet for Steven Lawson to explain his actions and apologize might come through a video interview, which is being considered pending the approval of his family, counselors, and the elders of his former church. Such a step could provide clarity and closure to the many affected by his actions.

Lawson has not cut off all ties with Dallas, as he has returned occasionally to visit his estranged wife, displaying a commitment to maintaining some familial connections despite the scandal.

In light of his permanent disqualification from ministry, Lawson has considered various avenues for secular employment. This consideration marks a significant transition from his life’s work thus far, indicating his acceptance of the consequences and a move toward a new chapter in his life.

Exploring Future Possibilities Beyond Pastoral Work

This phase of Lawson's life is a stark contrast to his years dedicated to spiritual leadership and church activities. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the personal accountability leaders are expected to uphold, and the impact of their actions on their lives and the lives of others involved.

The community and his followers continue to watch how Lawson manages this transition, looking for signs of genuine repentance and reform. The path ahead for Lawson includes profound changes, both personal and professional, as he navigates the consequences of his actions.

While the future remains uncertain for Lawson, the support from his brother, close friends, and professionals suggests a road to recovery that involves deep personal reflection and reorientation towards a life beyond the church.
