Suspect identified in Arizona pastor's killing

The quiet desert community of New River, Arizona, was shaken when a beloved local pastor was discovered dead in his home under disturbing circumstances.

Pastor William Schonemann, 76, was found deceased in his bedroom on April 28, and officials now say they have identified a suspect who is currently in custody on unrelated charges, the Christian Post reported.

Authorities say Schonemann was discovered on his bed with his arms extended and his hands affixed to the wall, prompting a swift homicide investigation by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The bizarre presentation of the scene and signs of violence indicated a deliberate act, though officials have yet to provide specific details about the evidence collected.

Community Grieves Loss of Respected Pastor

Schonemann had been a central figure in the New River community for over three decades, leading the congregation at New River Bible Chapel. Known for his outgoing personality and dedication to service, he was widely respected both as a spiritual guide and a neighbor.

Following the death of his wife, Crystal, in 2022 after nearly 50 years of marriage, Schonemann poured his energy even more deeply into his ministry and his love for automobiles. Friends and community members are mourning the loss, describing him as someone always eager to help others.

"I'm at a loss for words because I cannot imagine anyone in the whole world who would want to hurt that man," said Diane Brown, a longtime friend and member of his congregation. She fondly recalled the support he gave her following her loss and described him as her closest confidant.

Investigators Confirm Break in the Case

On Friday, June 6, officials from the sheriff's office confirmed a significant development in the investigation. A suspect has been identified in connection with the pastor’s death and is currently being held by another law enforcement agency on unrelated charges.

While this development marks progress in the case, the sheriff’s office has not released the suspect’s name or any specific information about how the person may be connected to the killing. Authorities indicated that the investigation is ongoing and declined to comment further as of June 9.

Earlier reports noted Schonemann suffered serious injuries before his death, but officials have not disclosed the nature or cause of those injuries. The exact timeline of events leading up to the discovery of his body also remains unclear.

Desert Town Continues to Search for Peace

Randall Schonemann spoke to local media about the emotional toll this has taken on the family. He expressed deep sorrow, saying he may never be able to comprehend the kind of person who would do this to his relative.

“I hope I can’t understand why a person did something like this,” he said, underscoring the brutal senselessness the family now confronts. The grief is compounded by the lingering questions about motive and circumstances.

Brown also shared the lasting effects of the pastor’s absence on the church community. “We’re a bunch of sheep who have lost our shepherd," she said, adding, "It’s really hard, really hard.”

Devotion Remembered Amid Unanswered Questions

Schonemann’s life was marked by both service in the U.S. Navy and decades of religious leadership. After returning from Vietnam, he found solace in faith and ultimately devoted much of his life to guiding others through hardship and spiritual growth.

Friends recall his generosity, strength during his wife’s long illness, and his passion for helping people, whether in worship or by fixing up cars in his spare time. These memories have become a source of comfort for a community still in shock.

“We know where he's at and I have to be at peace with that,” said Brown, acknowledging her faith while also expressing discomfort with the violent circumstances. “I don’t like the way his life was taken, but I know he’s at peace.”

Investigation Progresses but Closure Still Elusive

The sheriff's office has not indicated when additional information about the suspect might be shared or if charges specifically tied to the killing are imminent. Meanwhile, residents are urging for transparency and justice as they await further updates.

April’s discovery shook locals not only because of the violence involved, but also due to the victim’s reputation and standing in the area. For many, the mystery surrounding the killing deepens the community’s sense of loss.

As investigators continue their work, those who knew Schonemann cling to memories of a man they say embodied compassion, resilience, and unwavering faith. “He helped me through the worst time of my life,” Brown reflected. “I just wish we could have done the same for him.”
