Suspect kills 2 at Ky. church after shooting state trooper

A violent string of events Sunday in Kentucky left three people dead, including a suspect who shot a state trooper and later opened fire inside a Lexington church.

Authorities say the situation began when a state trooper was shot in Fayette County, leading the suspect to flee to a nearby church where he killed two women and injured several others before being fatally shot by law enforcement, The Christian Post reported.

The incident began at 11:36 a.m. when a Kentucky state trooper was shot in Fayette County during an encounter with a still-unidentified suspect. The trooper was transported to a local hospital for treatment, though officials have not disclosed the extent of the injuries.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and drove to Richmond Road Baptist Church, located in the southwestern area of Lexington. The church was conducting normal Sunday activities when the suspect arrived, according to reports from authorities.

Once inside the church, the suspect fatally shot two women. Officials identified their ages as 72 and 32, but did not confirm whether they were related or what their connection to the suspect may have been, if any.

Congregants Caught in Sudden Violence

Along with the two women who were killed, two additional people were shot during the attack at the church. Both of the surviving victims were taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Information on their conditions has not yet been released.

Authorities indicated that several members of the congregation may be related to one another. However, they have not clarified if the victims had any personal ties to the suspect or if the attack was targeted.

Responding law enforcement quickly arrived on the scene at the church following the incident. The suspect was shot and killed at the location by officers, bringing an end to the immediate threat.

Official Response and Public Reaction

The Kentucky State Police and Lexington Police Department are leading the investigation into the events. As of now, the name of the suspect is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear offered condolences on social media in the aftermath of the shootings. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the governor urged the public to support those affected by the tragedy.

“Please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let’s give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police,” Beshear wrote.

Questions Remain About Motive and Victims

The circumstances leading up to the initial shooting of the state trooper have not been disclosed by officials. It remains unclear what prompted the suspect’s actions that morning or whether he had a prior history with law enforcement or the church.

No information has been provided about how the suspect gained access to the church or what weapons were used in either the initial or subsequent shootings. Police have said they are still gathering evidence to fully understand the sequence of events.

As the investigation continues, local authorities have promised to release further details as they become available. The victims’ names have not yet been made public as families are notified.

Community Impact and Support Efforts

The Richmond Road Baptist Church community is reeling in the aftermath of the violent incident. Support services and counseling are expected to be offered to those affected in the congregation.

Residents of Lexington and surrounding areas have expressed shock and sadness over the violence that unfolded during a place of worship. Many are calling for increased protection at faith-based locations across the state.

Additional updates from law enforcement are anticipated in the coming days as more is known about the identities of those involved and the motive behind the attacks.
