Swaggart family to gather as televangelist remains unconscious

Jimmy Swaggart, one of the most well-known names in American televangelism, is in serious condition following a major heart attack earlier this month.

His family is expected to make important decisions as the 90-year-old remains unconscious in intensive care more than a week after suffering cardiac arrest at his Louisiana home, The Christian Post reported.

Swaggart was discovered unresponsive at his residence on June 15 by his son, Donnie Swaggart, and grandson. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he has remained under close observation in the intensive care unit.

Since his hospitalization, Swaggart’s condition has not improved, and he has not regained consciousness. As of the evening of June 25, an official update issued via his Facebook page confirmed there had been no meaningful change in his medical status.

The same online statement expressed appreciation for public support and requested continued prayers. It also urged the public to respect the family's privacy and avoid calling the ministry for information during this time.

Swaggart's Family Plans Critical Meeting

In a June 25 worship service at the Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Donnie Swaggart addressed the congregation with a somber message. He shared the family's current emotional strain and upcoming plans related to his father's uncertain condition.

Donnie noted that the entire Swaggart family, including grandchildren and extended relatives such as Joanna and Cliff, would be convening for a private meeting on Friday, June 27. This meeting is expected to focus on key issues facing the family and ministry in the wake of Jimmy Swaggart’s ongoing health battle.

"We are walking into a few hard days filled with difficult discussions," Donnie said, emphasizing how uncertain the coming period may be for both family members and the wider church community. He explained that the family's next decisions may involve long-term considerations should there be no improvement.

Concerns Rise as Recovery Remains Unlikely

From the pulpit, Donnie spoke openly about the severity of his father’s condition, stating they were preparing for the final chapter of Jimmy Swaggart’s life. “Unless there is a miracle from the Lord,” he said, the end could be near.

The worship service served as both an update for the congregation and a call for unity, prayer, and emotional support. Members of the faith community were encouraged to keep the ministry and its leaders uplifted during this time of distress.

A family representative echoed these sentiments, telling The Christian Post on June 23 that Swaggart's condition had remained unchanged since he first arrived at the hospital. The spokesperson did not provide additional details about his treatment or prognosis.

Legacy of a Controversial Evangelist

Swaggart has been a polarizing figure in American religious life for decades. He rose to national prominence in the 1970s and 1980s through widely broadcast radio and television sermons, as well as large-scale revival events around the world.

Ordained by the Assemblies of God, the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States, Swaggart built a large following, only to face intense scrutiny after public scandals. He was eventually defrocked due to verified allegations involving sexual misconduct with prostitutes.

Despite the controversy, Swaggart managed to maintain a loyal base of supporters and continued preaching. In 2010, he launched the SonLife Broadcasting Network, a media outlet that remains operational and broadcasts religious content globally.

Faith Community Prays for a Miracle

In recent days, friends, believers, and followers of Swaggart’s ministry have taken to social media to show solidarity with the ailing preacher and his loved ones. The official Facebook page for Jimmy Swaggart Ministries has received thousands of comments from supporters expressing hope and offering prayers.

Church officials have been careful in managing public communications surrounding Swaggart’s health, providing only limited updates and safeguarding the family’s privacy. As his condition persists without improvement, speculation about the future of the ministry continues to grow.

Friday’s family meeting may prove decisive not only for personal matters but for the overall direction of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. Donnie Swaggart noted that while the family remains strong in their faith, they are preparing for the possibility that recovery may not come.
