Target faces sales decline; Pastor Jamal Bryant leads 40-day boycott

In a significant protest movement, Megachurch Pastor Jamal Bryant has mobilized approximately 110,000 people in a 40-day boycott against Target, challenging the retail giant’s recent pullback from diversity initiatives.

According to the Christian Post, the boycott aims to press Target into reinstating its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

The call for boycott came during a church service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia. In a stirring address, Bryant sparked the campaign that criticizes Target for reducing its DEI efforts, a move seen as a betrayal by many in his congregation and beyond. The boycott started on a recent Wednesday and is scheduled to run until April 17, 2025.

Participants of the boycott have undertaken a significant fasting ritual as a sign of their protest. They consume only water or juice for 16 hours a day and eat just one light, healthy meal between noon and 8 PM. This health-focused protest not only demonstrates their commitment but also aims to maintain public attention for the 40 days.

Target's Financial Forecasts Show Impact of Boycott

Amid this significant social action, Target has noted a noticeable dip in sales, predicting a downturn in profits for the first quarter of 2025. This decline comes in a context where the broader retail sector is also experiencing weaker than expected sales since the beginning of the year, as reported by CNBC.

Target’s finance chief, Jim Lee, tied the soft sales to a range of factors including lower consumer confidence and unusually cold weather, which particularly affected apparel sales. Lee remains hopeful that sales will rebound with the onset of warmer weather and seasonal shopping periods like Easter.

In response to the ongoing boycott, Jim Lee expressed a cautious outlook. “We expect to see a moderation in this trend as apparel sales respond to warmer weather around the country, and consumers turn to Target for upcoming seasonal moments such as the Easter holiday," he stated. "We will continue to monitor these trends and will remain appropriately cautious with our expectations for the year ahead.”

Significant Backlash from Black Businesses and Community Leaders

Bryant's call to action extends beyond his congregation. He has urged black businesses to stop supplying products to Target, reporting that about 100 black vendors have already cut ties with the company. This move underscores the broader impact of the boycott, affecting Target's product diversity and availability.

This campaign gains further significance as other large corporations, like Walmart, follow suit in dialing back DEI efforts, a trend emerging after a pivotal Supreme Court ruling in 2023 that has reshaped corporate policies nationwide. Bryant highlighted Target’s rollback as not just a company decision but as "capitulating to political pressures" that he believes "undermine our national unity."

In a vigorous denouncement of Target’s actions, Bryant said, "McDonald's, we can drive right through there. Facebook, we could log right off. I'm telling you that Ford, we can switch it over for a Chevy, but Target, how dare you insult and spit in the face of black people." His outspoken stance emphasizes the deep sense of betrayal felt by supporters.

Future Steps and Organizational Plans of the Boycott Movement

Bryant and the boycott’s organizers are not only looking for immediate impacts but also long-term commitments. They demand that Target not only reinstates its full DEI commitments but also supports black businesses with significant financial commitments. These demands aim to ensure that Target’s policies align more closely with the values of racial equality and community support.

Looking ahead, the organizers plan to evaluate the impact of their boycott and seek a meeting with Target’s board of directors. Their goal is to discuss before June 12, 2025, the date scheduled for Target’s annual shareholders' meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This meeting could be a pivotal moment for both the movement and the corporation, depending on the outcomes of the ongoing boycott.

As the boycott progresses, the responses from both Target and its stakeholders, alongside the broader public and market reactions, will determine the future direction of corporate diversity policies and the strength of community-led activism in shaping business practices.
