Texas Megachurch Pastor Resigns Amid Allegations Of Harmful Conduct

Josiah Anthony, the now-former pastor of Cross Timbers Church, has stepped down after allegations of detrimental behavior that reportedly span several years.

According to Mail Online, Josiah Anthony's resignation follows a period marked by accusations of inappropriate actions, further exacerbated by struggles with his mental and emotional health.

Josiah Anthony's journey at Cross Timbers Church began in 2014 when he was hired as a student pastor. His rise within the church was notable, culminating in his promotion to Senior Pastor in March 2022. Throughout his tenure, Anthony became a defining face for the church’s community outreach and spiritual guidance.

From Student Pastor To Senior Leadership

The concerns regarding Anthony’s conduct did not surface until he held the position of Senior Pastor. According to church elder John Chalk, over the past few years, Anthony has been battling severe emotional and mental health issues, which significantly impacted his decision-making and behavior towards staff and congregation members.

As the situation evolved, the leadership of Cross Timbers Church reached a painful decision. "Josiah has been in a prolonged and sustained season of struggle with his emotional and mental health which has been very painful for him and those around him," said John Chalk in a statement read during a recent church service. These health challenges led to actions that were ultimately harmful to the church’s environment.

The Impact of Health Struggles on Leadership

Descriptions of the allegations have been vague, but the implications were severe enough to require a leadership reevaluation. Elder Chalk elaborated, stating, "Throughout this struggle, some of Josiah's decisions and actions were inappropriate and hurtful to current and former members of the CT family and staff." It became apparent that Anthony's ability to lead was irreparably compromised, leading to the church elders’ decision to ask for his resignation.

With the recent events coming to light, the church took immediate action. "Once all of this came to light over the last few weeks, it became evident that Josiah could not continue to serve as our lead pastor," stated Chalk. The transparency and handling of the issue have been focal points for the church’s approach to maintaining trust within its community.

Transitional Leadership and Church Response

Following Anthony’s resignation, Byron Copeland was appointed as the interim lead pastor. Copeland, who previously served at Gateway Church, now faces the task of steering Cross Timbers back to stability amid its internal crises. His experience with church leadership, especially under similar conditions, is expected to be an asset during this transitional period.

The church made efforts to disassociate from the former pastor in public domains, removing Anthony’s profile from its website. However, some of Anthony's sermons remain accessible on the church’s YouTube page, reflecting his once-prominent role within the community. The Argyle police have clarified that the circumstances surrounding Anthony's resignation are not criminal, as they have not been involved in any investigations related to his behaviors.

Community Reaction and Future Outlook

The community's reaction has been mixed, with many expressing disappointment and concern over the implications of such behavior in church leadership. Others have shown support for Anthony’s battle with health issues, emphasizing the need for support and understanding in such cases. Moving forward, Cross Timbers Church aims to foster a transparent, healing environment for all affected while reaffirming its commitment to ethical leadership and pastoral care.

In conclusion, Josiah Anthony's downfall as a leader at Cross Timbers Church is a complex tapestry of personal struggles and professional responsibilities. His story serves as a sober reminder of the human aspects behind church leadership and the profound impacts leadership can have on a community's spiritual and emotional well-being.
