Trump adds conservative archbishop to religious liberty panel
In a move drawing national attention, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco has joined an advisory board connected to President Donald Trump’s newly launched Religious Liberty Commission.
Established by presidential order on May 1, 2025, the commission is designed to safeguard religious freedom both within the United States and abroad through reporting, public awareness campaigns, and policy recommendations, the Christian Post reported.
The executive order announcing the commission was signed by Trump on May 1 and formally introduced during a National Day of Prayer ceremony held at the White House earlier that month. The initiative is set to operate at least through July 4, 2026, commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Commission includes leaders across denominations
According to the White House, the Religious Liberty Commission will consist of 14 central members, along with an advisory panel of up to 15 religious leaders. These advisors will provide insight to help shape the commission’s strategies and proposals.
The San Francisco Archdiocese publicly confirmed Cordileone’s appointment in a statement issued Thursday. A leading figure in American Catholicism, Cordileone has been outspoken on issues concerning Church doctrine and public officials.
“Religious liberty is a critical issue in our time that needs to be defended and addressed,” Cordileone said in the announcement. He added that he welcomed the chance to offer a Catholic contribution to national discourse regarding the freedom of faith.
Cordileone is known for the high-profile Pelosi dispute
National attention previously centered on Archbishop Cordileone during a prolonged and very public disagreement with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi lives within the boundaries of Cordileone’s archdiocese and has long supported legalized abortion.
In May 2021, Cordileone released guidance to Catholic politicians stating that continued abortion advocacy should disqualify them from receiving the Holy Eucharist. He wrote that professing Catholic beliefs while denying key Church teachings amounted to duplicity.
The rift deepened in 2022 when Cordileone directly barred Pelosi from receiving communion within the San Francisco Archdiocese. He stated she must first renounce her position on abortion and participate in the Sacrament of Penance to return to communion eligibility.
Faith disputes spotlight religious liberty themes
Cordileone's actions became a flashpoint in a wider debate during the presidency of Joe Biden, himself a Catholic who supports abortion rights. The controversy underscored divisions within the Church and brought issues of religious doctrine and political identity into sharp relief.
In a 2023 interview with the National Catholic Reporter, Pelosi rejected the authority of Catholic bishops regarding her religious life. “My Catholic faith is, Christ is my savior. It has nothing to do with the bishops,” she told the outlet.
Church leaders backing Cordileone’s stance often cited a 2004 letter by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI. The document maintained that clergy should withhold communion from public figures who support abortion or euthanasia and refuse to amend their position.
The role of the commission is outlined in detail
The Religious Liberty Commission’s responsibilities include documenting the role of religious freedom in American history and identifying contemporary threats to that liberty. It is also tasked with recommending federal actions, promoting interfaith harmony, and coordinating with international religious freedom efforts through the White House Faith Office.
In addition to Cordileone, other prominent Catholic figures named to the advisory board include Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, and Bishop Kevin Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
Representatives from other faiths also joined the panel, including Pastor Jentezen Franklin of Georgia, Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Pastor Jack Graham of Texas, Father Thomas Ferguson of Virginia, and four unnamed rabbis.
Broad religious coalition to advise the White House
The formation of the commission is widely viewed as Trump’s attempt to reestablish ties with evangelical and Catholic communities ahead of the 2026 celebrations. The advisory board’s input is expected to guide future executive policies related to religion in society.
Supporters of the initiative point to increasing cultural and legal battles over religious expression in public life, including disputes over healthcare mandates, religious education, and workplace accommodations.
Cordileone and others involved say the commission offers an essential chance to ensure faith traditions remain protected rights within an evolving and pluralistic nation. The commission's work is anticipated to span at least 14 months, approaching its conclusion on the nation’s semiquincentennial anniversary.
