Trump administration flags NY AG Letitia James for alleged mortgage fraud

A bitter feud between the Trump administration and New York Attorney General Letitia James takes a dramatic turn as new allegations surface regarding her mortgage applications and property declarations.

According to Fox News, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) has submitted a criminal referral to the Department of Justice, alleging that James committed mortgage fraud by falsifying records to secure favorable loan terms.

The shocking accusations stem from documents obtained by Fox News Channel's "The Ingraham Angle," which reveal discrepancies in James' property declarations.

FHFA Director William Pulte's letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi outlines concerning details about a Virginia property James reportedly claimed as her primary residence, despite her position as a New York elected official requiring residency in New York state.

Additionally, allegations suggest James misrepresented a New York property as a four-unit structure when it actually contained five units.

Key findings in mortgage fraud investigation

Legal experts have drawn attention to the striking parallels between these allegations and James' own prosecution of Trump.

Jonathan Turley, a Fox News contributor and George Washington University law professor, emphasized the ironic nature of the situation, particularly given James' aggressive pursuit of Trump for similar financial discrepancies. The documentation suggests potential violations that could carry serious legal consequences.

Documents reveal that James allegedly listed her father as her husband on mortgage applications in 1983 and 2000, raising questions about the validity of her loan applications. These revelations come at a particularly sensitive time, as James continues to pursue multiple legal actions against the Trump administration.

Paul Mauro, a retired NYPD inspector and Fox News contributor, had previously reported on these allegations through his Substack platform approximately ten weeks ago. His investigation into the authenticity of the documents has added credibility to the accusations against the New York Attorney General.

Legal battle intensifies between Trump and James

James' office responded swiftly to the allegations, with a spokesperson defending her record of protecting New Yorkers.

Her office stated:

She has been focused every single day on protecting New Yorkers, especially as this administration weaponizes the federal government against the rule of law and the Constitution. She will not be intimidated by bullies — no matter who they are.

The timing of these allegations is particularly significant, coming shortly after James secured a $454 million civil fraud judgment against Trump, which is currently under appeal.

The legal community has taken particular interest in the case, with Jonathan Turley noting:

This is a person who prosecuted Trump for everything short of ripping a label off a mattress, and among the charges that were brought in New York, in not just the civil but the criminal case, was making false or misleading statements to financial institutions.

Multiple legal fronts against Trump administration

James has maintained an aggressive stance against the Trump administration throughout 2025, leading at least five separate legal actions.

These include efforts to restrict DOGE's access to Treasury Department systems and challenging the administration's reduction in grant funding to research institutions and universities.

Latest developments in high-profile case

The criminal referral against Letitia James marks a significant escalation in the ongoing legal battles between the Trump administration and the New York Attorney General. The Federal Housing Finance Agency has presented evidence suggesting James may have committed mortgage fraud through false declarations on property documents and loan applications.

The Department of Justice now faces the task of evaluating these serious allegations against one of the country's most prominent state attorneys general.

As both sides prepare for potential legal proceedings, the outcome of this case could have significant implications for James' political future and her continued legal pursuits against the Trump administration.
