Trump, Musk clash over policy, end famous friendship

President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, once allies, now trade barbs in a messy public spat. Their feud, sparked by Musk’s sharp criticism of Trump’s prized tax bill, has spiraled into personal attacks and severed ties, as USA Today reports. Actions, it seems, have consequences.

Trump’s signature tax and policy bill, a cornerstone of his second-term agenda, became the flashpoint when Musk labeled it a “disgusting abomination” and urged Republicans to kill it.

This bold move from the billionaire, who briefly led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), set off a firestorm. The bill’s importance to Trump made Musk’s words a direct challenge.

Two days after Musk’s outburst, Trump aired his frustration to reporters in the Oval Office, calling himself “very disappointed” in Musk. He hinted that their once “great relationship” was finished. The sting of betrayal was clear in Trump’s tone.

From allies to adversaries

Musk didn’t back down, escalating the feud with audacious claims. He boasted that Trump’s presidency hinged on his support and even endorsed a third impeachment attempt against the president. Such bravado only deepened the rift.

Not stopping there, Musk alleged Trump’s name appeared in classified Jeffrey Epstein files, a provocative jab with no public evidence.

This move crossed a line, turning policy disagreements into personal warfare. Musk’s flair for drama was on full display.

Trump hit back, claiming he told Musk to leave his White House role. The president’s response, sharp and dismissive, showed he wasn’t fazed by Musk’s theatrics.

“I’m not even thinking about Elon,” Trump told CNN, adding, “The poor guy’s got a problem.”

Threats, power plays unfold

Trump upped the ante by threatening to slash billions in federal contracts tied to Musk’s companies. This wasn’t just talk -- it was a clear signal of Trump’s willingness to flex his authority. The move put Musk’s business empire in the crosshairs.

Before the feud reached its peak, Trump and Musk spoke on March 14, 2025, as Trump prepared to head to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. That conversation, one of their last, marked the end of Musk’s four-month stint in Trump’s administration. The door was closing fast.

Musk’s final day as head of the Department of Government Efficiency was May 30. His brief tenure, meant to streamline government, ended in a cloud of controversy. The billionaire’s exit was as turbulent as his time in office.

White House moves on

Trump could spend the weekend strategizing his next steps. The feud with Musk, while public, didn’t slow his focus on pushing his legislative agenda. Trump’s resilience shone through the noise.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the feud an “unfortunate episode,” blaming Musk’s discontent on the tax bill’s exclusion of his preferred policies. Her measured words aimed to downplay the drama while keeping the focus on Trump’s priorities. The administration was ready to move on.

Trump, never one to dwell, brushed off the conflict with confidence. “Oh, it’s okay. It’s going very well, never done better,” he told POLITICO last week, signaling his fight with Musk wasn’t shaking his stride.

Fractured alliance

A White House official told USA Today that Trump had no plans to speak with Musk moving forward. The bridge between the two was burned, and reconciliation seemed unlikely. Silence now replaced their once-frequent talks.

The feud’s fallout highlights the fragility of political alliances when egos and agendas collide. Musk’s criticisms, while bold, alienated a key ally in Trump, whose loyalty demands alignment. The billionaire learned that lesson the hard way.

Trump’s tax bill remains a battleground, but the president’s resolve appears unshaken. Musk, now on the outside, may find his influence in Washington diminished. In politics, as in life, choosing fights wisely matters.
