Trump proposes major income tax cuts as a result of tariff takings

President Donald Trump just dropped a bombshell that could change how Americans pay, or don’t pay, their taxes.

Trump announced on Thursday that the U.S. might see a drastic reduction, or even elimination, of income tax, thanks to a surge in revenue from newly imposed tariffs, as Breitbart reports.

Let’s rewind to the start of this year, when the administration rolled out a series of hefty tariff measures between Jan. 6 and May 13.

Tariff Policies Drive Revenue Surge

These aren’t your average trade tweaks -- they include a 30% levy on goods from China and Hong Kong, 25% duties on autos, auto parts, steel, and aluminum, plus a 10% general tariff on most other imports. Duty-free perks for low-value Chinese shipments? Kiss those goodbye.

The goal here isn’t just to flex muscle on trade; it’s to rake in serious cash for the federal coffers. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected in June 2025 that these tariffs will slash the federal deficit by a staggering $2.8 trillion over the next decade.

Before factoring in economic ripples, the CBO estimated a deficit cut of $3.0 trillion -- $2.5 trillion from primary deficits and $500 billion saved on interest payments. Even after accounting for a slight dip in GDP and a temporary inflation spike, the net savings still stand at an impressive $2.8 trillion.

Income Tax Cuts on the Horizon

Now, Trump is eyeing this tariff windfall as a ticket to lighten the tax burden on everyday Americans. He’s floated the idea of slashing income taxes significantly, maybe even wiping them out entirely.

“In the next couple of years, I think we’ll substantially be cutting, or maybe cutting out completely, but we’ll be cutting income tax,” Trump declared during an event on Nov. 27.

“Could be almost completely cutting it because the money we’re taking in is going to be so large,” he added. That’s a bold promise, and while the numbers from the CBO seem to back it up, one has to wonder if this is a sustainable swap for a tax system that’s been around since the 16th Amendment.

Tariff Dividends for American Pockets

But wait, there’s more -- Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has teased a creative twist to sell this policy to the public. He’s talking about tariff dividend checks, a direct payout to show Americans the tangible upside of these trade barriers.

“Well, look, the President wants to make sure the American people understand that the tariffs are there for their benefit, right? That it’s -- yes, it’s going to drive down our deficit. Yes, it’s going to make the country stronger,” Lutnick said on Fox Business Network’s Kudlow show in November.

“But he wants the people of America, the American people to appreciate these tariffs, and he knows if he puts money into their pocket and says, ‘Look, this was paid for by the tariffs,’ they’ll better understand how important this is for America. And so, that’s why he’s talking about it,” he continued. Call it a clever marketing move, but if it helps folks see past the progressive narrative of tariffs as mere price hikes, it might just work.

Balancing Economic Impacts and Promises

Critics will undoubtedly cry foul, pointing to the CBO’s note on economic side effects like lower GDP and brief inflation bumps. Yet, even with those headwinds, a $2.8 trillion deficit reduction isn’t pocket change -- it’s a lifeline for a nation drowning in debt.

The real question is whether this tariff-to-tax pivot can hold up long-term without punishing consumers at the checkout line. Trump’s vision is ambitious, aiming to protect American industries while easing the tax load, but the devil’s always in the details.

For now, this proposal is a refreshing push against the status quo of bloated government spending and overreach. If tariffs can fund the future without the IRS breathing down our necks, that’s a win worth watching -- provided the execution doesn’t trip over its own feet.
