U.S. Seizes Venezuelan President's Aircraft In Dominican Republic

The United States has seized a private jet belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, citing a violation of sanctions imposed during the Trump administration.

According to Fox News, the aircraft, valued at $13 million, was confiscated in the Dominican Republic and subsequently flown to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where it is now in U.S. custody.

The seizure was carried out by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Commerce.

U.S. authorities specifically cited a violation of Executive Order 13884, which was signed by former President Donald Trump in 2019. This order prohibits U.S. persons from engaging in transactions with individuals associated with the Venezuelan government, including members of the Maduro regime.

High-Value Asset Seized Through Joint Operation

The aircraft in question is a Dassault Falcon 900-EX, described by officials as Maduro's version of "Air Force One." It was reportedly used for the Venezuelan leader's state visits around the world. The plane's seizure resulted from a joint investigation involving HSI and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland commented on the operation, stating that the aircraft was allegedly purchased illegally for $13 million through a shell company and smuggled out of the United States. Garland emphasized that the Department of Justice would continue to pursue those who violate U.S. sanctions and export controls.

Assistant Matthew Axelrod of the Department of Commerce's Export Enforcement division added that the seizure sends a clear message about the consequences of illegally acquiring aircraft from the United States for the benefit of sanctioned Venezuelan officials.

Implications For US-Venezuela Relations

The seizure of Maduro's plane is expected to further strain relations between the United States and Venezuela. The two countries have had a contentious relationship for years, with the U.S. imposing various sanctions on Venezuela and its officials.

The specific executive order cited in this case, Executive Order 13884, was part of the Trump administration's efforts to pressure the Maduro regime. It prohibits transactions with persons acting on behalf of the Venezuelan government, including members of the Maduro administration.

This action demonstrates the continued enforcement of these sanctions even under a new U.S. administration, signaling a consistent approach to dealing with the Venezuelan government.

Details Of The Alleged Sanctions Violation

According to U.S. investigators, the purchase and export of the aircraft involved a complex scheme to circumvent sanctions. In late 2022 and early 2023, individuals affiliated with Maduro allegedly used a Caribbean-based shell company to conceal their involvement in the illegal purchase of the Dassault Falcon 900EX.

The aircraft was then illegally exported from the United States to Venezuela through the Caribbean in April 2023. Since May 2023, the plane, bearing tail number T7-ESPRT, has reportedly been used almost exclusively for flights to and from a military base in Venezuela.

U.S. officials claim that the aircraft has been used to transport Maduro and his representatives on visits to other countries, further violating the terms of the sanctions.

Ongoing Investigations And Potential Consequences

The Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security Miami Field Office is leading the investigation, working in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and HSI's El Dorado Task Force Miami.

This seizure may have broader implications for individuals and entities attempting to circumvent U.S. sanctions and export controls. It demonstrates the reach of U.S. law enforcement in tracking and seizing assets linked to sanctioned individuals and regimes.

The case also highlights the ongoing efforts of U.S. authorities to enforce sanctions against the Venezuelan government and its officials, even when transactions occur outside of U.S. territory.

Conclusion

The U.S. has seized a $13 million private jet belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, citing violations of sanctions imposed during the Trump administration. The aircraft was confiscated in the Dominican Republic and flown to Florida.

This action was based on Executive Order 13884 from 2019, which prohibits transactions with Venezuelan government-affiliated individuals. The seizure is likely to further strain U.S.-Venezuela relations and demonstrates the continued enforcement of sanctions against the Maduro regime.
