UFC star Conor McGregor enters Irish presidential race

In a surprising turn of events, former UFC champion Conor McGregor has declared his candidacy for the presidency of Ireland. McGregor, known for his combative style in the octagon, now seeks to bring his fighting spirit to the political arena.

McGregor's presidential campaign focuses primarily on immigration reform and challenging existing policies, as Breitbart reports.

The sports star made his political aspirations known through a post on the social media platform X this Thursday. He emphasized that immigration would be a central theme of his campaign, aligning his platform with a broader national debate.

The mixed martial arts fighter criticized the current administration's handling of the EU Migration Pact. He argues that the leadership is excessively lenient, which, in his view, could compromise Ireland's safety and quality of life.

Details on McGregor's Stance Emerge

Highlighting next year's deadline for the full implementation of the EU Migration Pact, McGregor plans to challenge the prevailing legislative approach.

His proposal includes a referendum designed to place the final decision directly in the hands of the Irish people.

"Ireland must fully implement the EU Migration Pact by June 12, 2026," McGregor stated, outlining the need for several legislative actions by both Houses of the Oireachtas before presidential assent. He expressed a firm intention to lead the public discussion and decision-making process regarding the migration pact.

"For clarity also, as President, I would put forth this bill to referendum. Although I oppose greatly this pact, it is neither mine nor government's choice to make. It is the people of Ireland's choice! Always! That is a true democracy!" McGregor declared, advocating for a participative democratic process.

Challenging Status Quo in Irish Politics

The upcoming presidential election, scheduled for Nov. 11, will see McGregor contest for leadership as the current president, Michael D. Higgins, approaches the end of his term. McGregor's entry into the race is expected to stir significant public interest and debate.

His critique extends to the broader European approach to borders, which he describes as "extremely lenient, open-borders-style rules."

These policies, according to McGregor, have rendered parts of Europe unsafe and have led to a deterioration in the living conditions in some areas.

"Who else will stand up to the Government and oppose this bill? Any other presidential candidate they attempt to put forward will be of no resistance to them. I will!" McGregor stated emphatically, positioning himself as a formidable and distinct choice for voters.

Public Reaction, Political Climate Assessed

McGregor's fierce stance on immigration and his call for a referendum have sparked a mixture of support and criticism. While he has garnered a strong base of supporters who appreciate his outspoken nature and decisive action, he has also faced backlash from politicians who favor stronger ties with the European Union.

The candidate has previously voiced concerns about the impacts of illegal immigration on rural Irish towns, claiming that "the illegal immigration racket is running ravage on the country." These remarks resonate with certain sections of the populace who feel that their concerns have been neglected by current policies.

"All citizens of Ireland to have a voice and a choice on their future! God bless our people!" McGregor concluded, signaling his populist approach to engage with voters across the nation.

Road Ahead for McGregor's Campaign

As election day approaches, McGregor’s campaign is set to intensify its activities. His messages, characterized by calls for national sovereignty and direct democratic participation, are likely to shape the contours of political debates in Ireland in the coming months.

"This is the future of Ireland with me as president," McGregor announced, underlining his vision for a changed Ireland under his leadership. The response from voters in the forthcoming months will determine whether this UFC champion can translate his athletic success into a political victory.

"Vote McGregor and have your voice heard!" is the rallying cry with which McGregor is not just campaigning for office but also attempting to redefine Irish politics.
